🕑 Added 2023-08-06 12:00:01 +0000 UTC Off to protest the Vietnam War ✌🏻 Something I never realized from high school history class: the (anti-) Vietnam War aesthetic (peace signs, flower power, free love and the rise of The Yippies and Hippies) only occurred at the very end of the Vietnam War, and largely after the United States implemented the draft. Prior to that time, the U.S. had been involved since just after World War II, fearing the spread of communism. The involvement stretched across 20 years, with the last few really defining the aesthetic we currently associate with the Vietnam War (ca. 1965 to its end in 1973). Bandanas were just one small accessory used in hippie culture/aesthetic as an anti-war subculture fashion choice. Bandanas have continued to take on meanings to represent different sexual preferences, but more on that in another post.
