Someone tried to say that a woman’s value decreases as she ages as a man’s value increases when he ages. Says who? They tried to parade it off as objective fact supported by scientific data. Well, says who then? Who defines women and men’s value? Not evolution — evolution only tells us who survives and reproduces — it doesn’t assign value other than reproduction and survival rate. It’s society that dictates women and men’s value. Women aren’t inherently decreasing in value as they age, it’s society that tells us this. Sure, we can say men evolved to prefer youthful features but that preference doesn’t dictate a woman’s value. In evolutionary terms, women are actually more valuable than men because they have wombs and the capacity to bring life into the world. We evolved from mainly our female ancestors; much of the men of our past were evolutionary dead ends who failed to survive and reproduce. I hate sexist misogynistic language disguised as “science”. This narrative that women lose their value as their age is the reason women are often hostile toward each other, prevents them from working together. This book I read called Beauty Sickness really explains well how this fixation on physical appearance is unfortunately unavoidable — even if you grew up in a household which praised only your achievements, didn’t care about how you dressed or presented yourself, you still are f o r c e d to exist in the world where your value as a person hinges on how pretty you are. If you ever make fun of a woman for getting plastic surgery or editing her photos, think about the society that makes her feel she must do this. I hate people trying to make me feel bad about myself for doing something as natural as aging. Is it really such an insult to grow and develop as a human? Should we just off ourselves after 25 because we’re pretty much useless at that point? I mean, I technically have already hit the age where they claim women “hit the wall” and I think I’m doing just fine.
