When someone says they "gave 'em the whole 9 yards", they aren't referring to football. It was actually the length of the ammo belt that fed the .50 cal machine guns that were mounted in the B-17 bombers from ww2. So, to give someone 9 yards means you fired all of your gun's ammo at something.
