The words swam. Ryan stared until his vision blurred, then he was already moving. Eli froze. He didn’t turn around immediately.

Eli finally looked. His eyes were red, puffy, heart-breakingly beautiful. “What are you doing?”
“Don’t leave like this.” Ryan’s voice cracked open. “Please.”
Eli tried to pull his hand free. “It’s too late.”
Ryan stepped closer, crowding Eli back against the side of the car, hidden between two tall SUVs. “You think I’m just going to let you drive away after everything? After last night?”
Eli’s laugh was small and bitter. “You tortured me all throughout school, then let me think I was nothing for ten years. One night doesn’t erase that.”
Ryan’s forehead dropped to Eli’s shoulder. His voice came out raw and broken. “I know. I know I fucked up. I was a coward. But last night…that was me finally being honest. And I can’t…” He swallowed hard. “I can’t lose you again. Not like this.”
Eli exhaled shakily. He searched Ryan’s face and saw the naked panic, the desperation, the thing that looked dangerously close to love.

Eli: Where are you flying to?
Ryan: Seattle. Been there the last four years.
Eli blinked. Seattle. Over a thousand miles away.
Eli: You live in Seattle?

Eli: Because that’s where I live. Right now. Today. I’m driving back there.
A long pause. Three dots. Then:
Ryan: You’re fucking kidding me.
Eli: I’m not.
Ryan: Holy shit.
Eli: Yeah.
Ryan: So…we’re not done?
Eli smiled, thumbs flying across the screen.
Eli: Not even close.
Ryan: Maybe my apartment search is over then?
Eli started the car again, heart lighter than it had been in years.
Eli: Maybe so.
He pulled back onto the highway, the Denver skyline rising ahead, and for the first time in a very long time, the road home felt like the beginning of something instead of the end.
