The drive up to campus felt longer than it should have, even though it was only three hours from home. Max kept one hand on the wheel of his old Jeep, the other resting on the gear shift, while Benji sat shotgun with his bare feet propped on the dash. The back was crammed with boxes, duffel bags, and a mini fridge that kept sliding forward every time Max hit the brakes. Helen, Benji’s mom, and Richard, Max’s dad, followed in Richard’s truck, hauling the rest of their shit.
Benji’s hand had found its way to Max’s thigh about 20 minutes outside of town. At first it was innocent, just resting there. Then his fingers started moving, slow circles, creeping higher towards the opening of his shorts. Max shot him a look.
“Keep that up and we’re pulling over,” Max muttered.
Benji grinned. “Promise?”
Max’s rolled his eyes, but the corner of his mouth twitched. “You’re killing me, you know that?”
Benji leaned over the console just enough to brush his lips against Max’s ear. “I can’t stop thinking about last night. The way you pinned me down and fucked me so slow I almost cried. I want that again. Right now.” he whispered seductively.
Max’s grip on the wheel went white-knuckled. “Jesus, Benji.” A tent started forming in his shorts which made Benji chuckle.
They didn’t pull over. But the rest of the drive was torture, the air thick with heat and the smell of summer sweat and the faint pine air freshener hanging from the rear-view mirror that Max refused to throw away.
When they finally rolled into the parking lot outside the freshman dorms, the place was utter chaos. Parents yelling directions, kids hauling suitcases, music blasting from open windows. Max parked and killed the engine.
Benji stretched, his shirt riding up to show a strip of tan skin. “Ready to be college boys?”
Max looked at him for a long second. “Ready to be alone with you in a room with a door that locks properly.”
Benji laughed, soft and a little nervous. The summer had been good. Really good. After the camping trip and what happened at the dinner table, things had shifted. Their parents never made a huge deal out of it. They caught the boys holding hands on the couch during movie nights, saw Benji curled into Max’s side with Max’s arm around his shoulders, even walked in once on Benji straddling Max’s lap in the living room, kissing like they were starving. No lectures. No awkward family meetings. Just quiet smiles from Helen and a couple of “be safe” comments from Richard. It was weirdly perfect. Like having permission without having to ask for it.
They grabbed the first load and headed inside. The check-in lady handed them two keys. “You guys are in 312. It’s a double room, so you boys lucked out…no third roommate. Lucky draw.”
Max and Benji exchanged a quick look. Lucky draw?
The room was on the third floor at the end of the hall. It was a standard double: two twin beds pushed against opposite walls, two desks, one closet, one window overlooking the quad. The other room option had three beds crammed into just a slightly bigger space. The boys were glad to score a double. They looked around quickly before heading back to the car.
They started hauling stuff in. Ten minutes later their parents showed up with the last of the boxes. Helen carried a plastic shopping bag like it was treasure.
“Before you two start fighting over who gets which bed,” she said, “I brought something.”
She pulled out a set of king-size sheets, still in the package. Crisp white fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcases, the works.
Benji’s face went pink. “Mom…”
“One set of sheets,” she said with a grin, repeating the same line she’d dropped that summer after the boys got back from the camping trip. “Remember?”
Richard chuckled and set down the box he was carrying. “Come on, boys. Help us out.”
Before either of them could protest, Helen and Richard started shoving the twin beds together. Mattresses slid, frames scraped against the floor, headboards knocked together. They worked like they’d done it before, efficient and amused. When the beds were flush, Richard zip-tied the posts on the headboards and footboards together. “So they don’t slide apart” he said. Helen tucked the fitted sheet over both mattresses and then smoothed outthe flat one.
Benji stood there, arms full of clothes hangers, staring. “You…you guys arranged this?”
Helen shrugged, innocent. “Housing said they were flexible if we explained the situation. Close stepbrothers and all. We just suggested they put you together.”
Richard finished tucking in the comforter and stepped back to admire it. “Figured you’d appreciate the extra space…and the privacy.”
The word hung there. Privacy. Max’s ears turned red. Benji looked like he wanted to sink through the floor.
Helen kissed Benji’s cheek, then hugged Max. “Don’t break the bed on night one,” she said, winking.
Richard clapped Max on the shoulder. “Have fun. Call if you need anything.”
And then they were gone, door clicking shut behind them.
Silence.
Benji let out a long breath. “Holy shit.”
Max stared at the giant bed taking up half the room. “They really just did that.”
Benji walked over and sat on the edge of the mattress. It dipped under him, the two mattresses together making one big, slightly uneven surface. “It’s…kind of perfect.”
Max dropped the box he was holding and crossed the room in two steps. He stood between Benji’s knees, hands on Benji’s shoulders. “You okay?”
Benji looked up at him. “Yeah. Just…didn’t expect them to do…and say…all that.”
Max leaned down and kissed him, slow and deep. Benji’s hands slid up Max’s back under his shirt. When they broke apart, both of them were breathing harder.
“Let’s unpack,” Max said. “Before I drag you onto this thing and don’t let you up for hours.”
They started sorting boxes. Clothes went in the closet, books on the shelves, chargers plugged in on both sides of their bed. It felt domestic in a way that made Benji’s chest ache a little. Like they were building something real.
Halfway through, Max opened a small cardboard box labeled “keepsakes” in Sharpie. He pulled out an envelope and froze.
Benji noticed. “What?”
Max slid what was inside, out. It was a photo from the summer, taken with the old Polaroid camera Max kept in the nightstand. The photo showed them fully naked on Benji’s bed back home, sheets tangled around their legs. Max was behind Benji, one arm wrapped around Benji’s chest, the other hand gripping his hip hard enough to leave marks. Benji’s head was thrown back, eyes closed, mouth open in obvious pleasure. You could see everything: Max’s thick, cut cock buried deep inside him, Benji’s smaller dick hard and flushed against his stomach.
Max’s throat went dry. “I forgot we took this.”
Benji took the photo from him, studying it. His eyes welled up. “You kept it?”

Benji stared at the picture for a long moment. Then he walked over to the cork board above the desks, pulled a pushpin from the package of supplies, and tacked the Polaroid right in the center.
Max’s heart stuttered. “You’re hanging it up?”
“Right where I can see it every day,” Benji said, “And I mean, no one pays attention to what’s on a cork board, so if anyone comes in the room, they won’t notice it!”
Max swallowed. The photo looked obscene and beautiful at the same time, pinned there like a secret they weren’t hiding from each other anymore. He crossed over to the bed, curling his finger as of to say ‘come here.’
Benji crossed towards him. Max pulled him in, hands sliding down to cup his ass through his jeans. They kissed again, hungrier this time. Benji could feel Max getting hard against his hip, that familiar thick length pressing insistently.
They broke apart when they heard footsteps in the hall.
“Later,” Max promised.
They finished unpacking. The room started looking lived-in: posters on the wall, string lights draped over the window, a couple of framed pictures from home (the safe ones). The bed sat there…calling out to them.
Finally they collapsed onto it, side by side, staring at the ceiling.
Benji rolled onto his side, propping his head on his hand. “So…how open are we gonna be here?”
Max rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t know. I don’t want to hide forever. I want people to know you're my boyfriend. But we’re also stepbrothers. People will talk shit if they know both facts. Maybe we play it by ear? No big announcements. We’ll just see how it feels.”
Benji nodded slowly. “And for now, let’s not mention the stepbrother thing unless we have to. Just…same high school…friends since kids kinda thing.”
“Deal.”
They lay there quiet for a minute.
Benji traced a finger down Max’s arm. “I like it here already.”
Max caught his hand and brought it to his mouth, kissing the knuckles. “Me too.”
The energy felt for them both like their clothes were about to come off when suddenly…a knock at the door.
They sat up fast.
The door opened without waiting for an answer. A guy stepped in: slim, maybe 5’9”, colorful streak in his blond hair, a cropped t-shirt showing a strip of smooth stomach, ripped skinny jeans. He had that easy, twink energy, all bright smile and quick movements.
“Hey freshies!” he said. “I’m Ethan. Your floor RA. Just doing quick intros and dropping off the welcome packet.”
He looked at them both sitting so close on the bed, his head tilting. “You two seem really comfortable already. You know each other?”
Max and Benji exchanged a glance.
“We went to the same school,” Max said, casual. “So we’ve been around each other forever.”
Ethan’s eyes flicked to the giant (against regulation) bed, then back to them. He made a small sound, somewhere between a hum and a laugh. “Uh-huh. Right. Cool setup you’ve got here.”
He handed them a folder. “We have a floor meeting at seven. There will be pizza and icebreakers. Don’t be late or I’ll hunt you down.” His gaze lingered on Benji a second longer than necessary, playful. “Especially you. You look like you’d be fun at icebreakers.”
Benji felt his face heat. Max’s jaw tightened just a fraction.
Ethan winked and backed toward the door. “See you later, cuties.”
The door clicked shut.
Silence again.
Max looked at Benji. “He knows.”
“He suspects,” Benji corrected. “Big difference.”
“Well I didn’t like the way he looked at you” Max scoffed. But he quickly let it go. He stood up and locked the door. Then he turned, eyes dark. “Come here.”
Benji didn’t hesitate. Max caught him around the waist and pushed him back onto the bed. Max climbed over him, mouth crashing down in a bruising kiss. Benji moaned into it, hands yanking at Max’s shirt.
Their shirts came off fast. Max’s chest was broad, dusted with dark hair, muscles shifting under skin. Benji ran his hands over him, exploring every inch. Max’s shorts were next, shoved down just enough. His cock sprang free and his thick, cut head was already slick.
Benji stared, like he always did when Max pulled his cock out. “God, you’re huge. I’ll never get over it!”
Max smirked. “You’ll never have to.”
Benji’s jeans and briefs went next. His own dick was hard, flushed, smaller than Max’s but not small, curving up toward his stomach.
Max lined them up and wrapped a hand around both of them, stroking slow. Benji arched, gasping.
“I’ve been thinking about this all day,” Max growled against Benji’s neck. “Fucking you on this bed. Making you moan loud enough that the whole floor hears.”
Benji’s legs wrapped around Max’s waist. “Then do it.”
Max reached for the lube in the nightstand drawer they’d just stocked. He slicked his fingers, worked Benji open carefully, the way he always did. Benji writhed, begging.
When Max finally pushed inside, it was deep and steady, filling him completely. Benji’s head fell back.
“Fuck,” Benji breathed. “Fuck me like you did the first time.”
Max stilled for a second, eyes locked on Benji’s. He couldn’t believe how hot that sentence was. Then he started moving, hard and fast, hips snapping.
They lost themselves in it. The bed creaked. Skin slapped skin. Benji’s nails dug into Max’s back. Max’s mouth was everywhere: neck, collarbone, leaving marks he’d have to cover tomorrow.
Benji was already close, so close, when another sharp knock sounded at the door.
They froze.
Max’s hips stilled, buried deep. Benji’s eyes went wide.
Another knock. Louder.
Max cursed under his breath. He pulled out slow, both of them wincing. Benji scrambled for his briefs. Max yanked his shorts up, tucking his boner in the waistband. Shirts were grabbed off the floor and thrown on quickly.
Benji’s face was flushed, hair wrecked. Max looked wrecked too, lips swollen, eyes still lustful with want.
The knocking came again.
They looked at each other, hearts pounding, as Max reached for the doorknob.
