Before 1.16/17, we didn't had biome/ world blending, as a result, the "contained" island style you all know and have seen, have become the default solution. Separating the "core world" from the vanilla world by an ocean.
As a result of that, a big section of the world is just ocean/water, which could be used for more lands and terrains. So alternatively to ocean, simple plains would be my alternative, to make space for more map areas and terrains.

Honestly I haven't thought about this before. But having an island world has its charm, its feels like my own island/kingdom/dominion I don't have to leave and if I do it's like going abroad. I definitely agree on this with SheriffOfSpace. On second thought I would like to see an experiment where the map edge is ended with other biomes, not specifically saying plains.

Just my two cents but I like them being islands (or continents depending on size), makes them feel special
