It's probably already been said, but the Targaryens are notorious for inbreeding due to their obsession with keeping the bloodline "pure". King Viserys' first wife (Rhaenyra's mother) is his first cousin. Little Laena would have been his wife/second cousin. That's just how they get down, and is the reason many Targeryens descend into "madness".

I always have comments in my head to explain lore and then by the end of the episode I’ve totally forgotten, so I’m already stopping at 1:45 to explain something lol. Mir is right about the writing thing, the book this is based on is about the Targaryen dynasty, and in OUR world, it’s written by GRRM. In the world of Ice and Fire, this book was written 100+ years after these events, as a history book of sorts, therefore the “author” is unreliable. There’s a lot of back and forth in the fandom because the show took liberties, a lot of them. But it could be argued that the whole book could be false front to back. The better argument is that you can’t just eliminate whole characters and storylines for the sake of time. But I digress 😅
