Super Metroid - sketch

Hope you're good! Here's the next project - Super Metroid - one of my favorite games ever. I've been trying to find an approach that uses a bit more realistic lighting for this one, here's the test I did for a style - this isn't emblematic of the final, this is just a 20 minute thing to see how a potential workflow would go -
Through this I found a really simple way of establishing and working through my lighting and forms. For what I have in mind for this Super Metroid illustration I think things should end up looking a bit more realistic. I'm gonna be aiming for a realistic oil look, we'll see how that turns out!
Anyway, I've always wanted to create something for this property, so I'm super excited to pull this one together. Some of the placement of the bosses may change on the bottom as I go, they're more or less roughed in so I have a general idea of how they'll all fit together. I'll share some process as to how this all comes together using the new approach. Should be smooth, crossing my fingers at least!
Thanks as always for your support!

Hi Dave, just wondering what brushes do you recommend for someone starting out on painting in Photoshop? Best.

I’m already excited by the potential, love the designs in Metroid. Ridley being dragon-like creature that’s also intelligent is such a cool idea. Hope you enjoy painting this one!

Great stuff Dave. It’s a great achievement to be able to lay an idea down very rapidly and get such a good read. Probably feels simple to you now, but when I try doing this I get mixed results. This is a ‘holy grail’ skill for me. Do you have any ‘fails’ that you don’t show using this process or do you generally use the process to adjust on the fly to get the result you’re envisioning?

Dave, you're gonna make me cry. I watched the composition tips vid a while back and was doing a Super Metroid 'covers' project inspired by some shit I got from that - Now you gon' do it BETTER. hah Super Metroid is my fondest childhood memory of gaming. Replay that sucker every couple of years. Can't wait to see this come together!
