Hey!
Hope you're well! I wanted to share with you how I prepare for something that is a deviation from my normal style - this is an approach I generally use before diving headfirst into a new type of painting technique or overall step by step change in the process. Both the bust study as well as the Vampire Hunter D were both studies to hopefully establish a new textured style that I could use in the Symphony of the Night painting that I've been currently working on. I tried my best to use more traditional type textural brushes and maintain that look throughout the studies so that I could get a handle on how I might incorporate it into a reliable process with which to paint something time intensive.
I really try my best not to devote myself so something huge until I have an idea of a way forward - at least when it comes to the execution of the painting itself. Without doing little studies like this I'd be doing all my learning while simultaneously trying to successfully paint what should be a well thought out piece. Honestly, I find that when you plan to switch things up, it's helpful to just do quick approaches to what you have in mind in simple one off illustrations/studies like these.
The first study, the bust, was to nail down textures while also maintaining somewhat realistic lighting and edge control. The Vampire Hunter D illustration/study was meant to use what I learned from the bust study and apply it from imagination and see what I've learned and if I can improve on the approach. That being said, I felt that they both helped me quite a bit to learn and made me feel much more comfortable going into the Symphony of the Night illustration. Not to say that I haven't gone on to learn much more as I paint the SOTN piece, but it was a great starting point!
If you'd like to go through the layers of both the bust & Vampire Hunter D PSDs, they're attached to this post!
Morrigan was just a doodle I was doin for fun!
Hope this is helpful! Thanks as always for your support!

Where can I find the brushes you used in the vampire hunter drawing, Dave?

I’m definitely interested in that Morrigan sketch, looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Definitely would love to see more of the Darkstalkers cast.

I think fighting game characters are something you could really run wild with long-term. They’re designed to be visually striking and unique as a means of facilitating self-expression in play, so being able to draw that out and capture the essence of that character’s specific stylistic energy is something I know I need more of in *my* life, so you can feel free to keep on doing that shit for as long as you like. Especially if you start taking on characters from lesser-known franchises or those franchises that have (unjustly) been on life support. I mean, you don’t have to do a big Rival Schools collage, but if you did, I certainly wouldn’t bitch

Thanks for driving the point of doing studies. ♥ I sometimes catch myself second-guessing how I approach mine and this is a good reminder that it's better to focus on intention rather than perfection

Wow! I really love how you approach these studies. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from what you offer us here. Thank you so much Dave. And congratulations on the newborn. All the best. <3

I'm actually just a corpse who uses scavenged hours at night and during baby naps. I also did a cover for God of War the past 3 days, I'm dead haha

I can’t imagine how you’re still putting content out with the newborn, props to you man. You must have more hours in the day or something
