Sigma/Reinhardt – how Reinhardt met his submissive and fell in love with him. It's not all nice and smelling of roses, though; Siebren has... problems.
Reinhardt has known Siebren through friends of friends for a couple of years now. Longer even, probably. He doesn’t think that Dr. de Kuiper has ever even heard his name, but the way he understands the situation, it is probably for the best.
He’s never interacted with the man before but he seems like the type that would worry themselves over… everything, really.
“He should be here any minute now,” Angela murmurs next to him. “I hope he finds it. I gave him really detailed instructions, but…” she trails off, glancing at Reinhardt, then lifting her hands. “He’s a professor, he’s not an idiot. He just-”
“You said he disassociates a lot, yes?”
She deflates and then nods miserably.
“Yes.”
“Maybe I should go and see whether I can find him.” Reinhardt drinks the last dredges of his beer, then stands, instinctively hunching slightly so he doesn’t hit his head on the low, curved ceiling of the alcove they’re sitting in.
Angela looks relieved, reaching out and squeezing his thick wrist.
“That would be great. Thank you.”
He gently pats her little hand with his huge paw and smiles at her a bit distractedly before shoving himself out of the little niche to make his way out of the club. He waves towards the bartender and murmurs a thanks to the bouncer at the door; he’s well known in the establishment, and they know he’ll be back.
He doesn’t need to go far in his search to see the tall, distinguished looking man. He’s never seen a picture of Dr. de Kuiper but it is easy to recognize him just from the descriptions he’s gotten over the years.
He is standing at the edge of a sidewalk, hands hanging at his sides, looking around himself as if he is admiring the sight of the neighbourhood.
Reinhardt approaches slowly. It is late enough that not many people are around anymore and thankfully nobody is paying much attention to the man despite him clearly looking like he has money with the long, exquisite coat he is wearing.
“Excuse me… Doctor?” Reinhardt says gently when he is close enough, hand outstretched, almost touching the small of Siebren’s back. Siebren doesn’t react. Close up, his face looks more filled with something childlike and dismayed, his big blue eyes large and confused.
“Doctor,” Reinhardt murmurs again, a bit louder, wrapping his fingers around Siebren’s bicep. That, at last, jerks him out of whatever stupor had taken hold of him. He blinks rapidly, staring at Reinhardt’s face, black brows twitching as if about to frown.
“I am Reinhardt. Angela and I have been waiting for you…?” The names seem to do the trick, and the suspicious squint leaves Siebren’s face. Instead he breaks out into a big smile that has the corners of his eyes crinkling. It is absolutely charming, but has nothing of the childlike qualities from before. Reinhardt is definitely hooked.

They don’t date for another few weeks. Siebren is new in the states and just beginning a job at a university where he mainly researches but also teaches.
Reinhardt already knows that he definitely wants to pursue something right from the get-go but Siebren is a shy, gentle man that definitely needs time to come to terms with his new situation.
Staying in the Netherlands had not been an option, though. Reinhardt knows enough of his past to not overly pry, and Siebren never speaks of anything about his love live anyway; until they do finally start to date.
It is sweet, really. Reinhardt feels like a boy again when he gently pushes Siebren against the railing at the water and asks if he can kiss him.
It’s a new feeling to have a boy as tall (and as old) as him, but Siebren is as soft and willing in his training as any of the other subs Reinhardt has ever had beneath him.
It is around that time that Lúcio approaches him with a problematic submissive of his own. Reinhardt is fascinated by the similarities between Gabriel and Siebren: both not immediately pegged as submissives but desperately wanting to be put under anyway. Both with their share of trauma but with wildly different approaches to coping with it.
Where Gabriel is explosive to the point of almost violence, and taciturn to boot, Siebren is as submissively obedient as a little dog, hunching in on himself and flinching in a way that tells Reinhardt more than enough about his partners before coming to the US.
Dealing with Siebren is less about dealing with an inexperienced submissive that needs to be trained, and more about learning how he and his dissociations work. Siebren is not only a delicious little treat that bends over backwards to try and make Reinhardt a delicious meal or begging to be able to rub his feet; he also has episodes in which his whole personality seems to do a 180.
The first time took him by surprise, even though he admits that it shouldn’t have. Angela has warned him in spades about it. He’s read up on it to an extend. He has been waiting for it, even, but coming back home after a long day at work – one of the last before he got to retire – and having to duck a vase thrown at him still had taken him by surprise.
Siebren, still in soft sweater and pants had looked deranged with malice, erratically prowling the room, seemingly looking for more easily breakable things to throw at Reinhardt.
That one had been… difficult to get over, even after he’s managed to catch Siebren in a large blanket and use his greater muscle mass to force him to stay still and calm down.
They still don’t know to this day what the trigger had been that particularly memorable evening, but Reinhardt could feel the effects of it long afterwards.

“Hey… where are you going?”
Reinhardt literally runs into Siebren downstairs of their apartment complex. He is looking down at the two large suitcases his submissive is trying to handle. Siebren does not look at him but he gets a good bit paler around his big hawkish nose.
“You’re home early…”
“Yes. A little bit. And looks like that was my luck. Did you… did you want to just leave?”
Siebren winces. He seems to shrink in on himself as Reinhardt speaks.
“No… yes… I … left a note on the table.”
Reinhardt stares at him, mind racing as he tries to figure out what to do. What to say to make his submissive stay with him. Beneath the high collar of his sweater, Reinhardt can see the feint outline of his collar. He is unsure if Siebren has just forgotten to take it off or is wearing it on purpose.
“Have I scared you?” Reinhardt says gently. He does not touch Siebren, but he does duck down some to get a better look at his downturned face. He has to clasp his hands behind his back so he doesn’t reach out to the slightly older man. Over the course of the few months they had been living together, he had found out a bit about Siebren; like how sensitive to touch he could be sometimes.
How even getting fingers brushed across his gaunt cheek could make him uncomfortable to the point of pain.
Siebren looks… miserable. He shakes his head and at least leans down to gently set his big suitcases down. They’re in the middle of the entrance hall of their building but at this hour there is little going on.
His pale, blue eyes flick up to look at Reinhardt, then back again.
“No… Of course not.” He slowly clasps his hands in front of himself. His fingers are distractingly long and slender (and look almost upsettingly good wrapped around Reinhardt’s cock). “It is just… I feel like I have overstayed my welcome. I feel like I am making you uncomfortable, and that is not my agenda.”
“And what is your agenda?” Reinhardt inquires politely like he doesn’t want to grab Siebren and put him in his pocket to be able to carry him around with him forever.
Siebren is quiet, his broad shoulders lifting towards his ears. He doesn’t say anything for the longest time, and Reinhardt is not necessarily suited to be a quite person, so he rumbles: “You’re not making me uncomfortable. That last episode is still… there, though. I can feel it. And I know you can feel it as well.”
In truth, he has found himself tensing lately when he approaches his apartment, ready to duck out of the way of a flying object; almost dreading which version of Siebren he might find behind the door.
“I want to be with you…” Siebren says, voice so small and miserable that it aches to hear.
“May I touch you?” Reinhardt asks on a low rumble, and when Siebren nods, he reaches for the hands clasped together and holds them between his own. Siebren seems to be perpetually cold, and this time is no exception.
“I want to talk to you about what happened. I want to move past this with you. And I don’t want you to leave, either. But I can call Angela if that makes you more-”
He is interrupted by Siebren almost falling into him, pressing his face against Reinhardt’s shoulder, his thinning hair gently tickling against Reinhardt’s full beard.
“I don’t want to leave,” he admits softly. Reinhardt breathes out heavily and nods.
“We’ll get through this.”
It feels like he’s only just scratched the surface of what makes Siebren Siebren.
He is determined to find out everything.
