Brütal Legend - #1 - The Roadie (patreon exclusive)
🕑 Added 2025-03-17 17:30:02 +0000 UTCWelcome to our most unusual playthrough yet!
To explain...
As a long-time fan of Double Fine's games, I've always wanted to play the studio's other biggest game, Brütal Legend, on the channel. Of course, given Brütal Legend is packed with licensed metal music, doing so on YouTube is more or less impossible. So I've decided to instead do this playthrough as a special bonus thing for patrons!
Starting today, we'll be releasing new episodes on our traditional bonus playthrough cadence of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each episode will be available to stream via Patreon's video feature (assuming there are no hiccups), but also as a downloadable 1440p mp4 file! I intend to keep these episodes perpetually available for patrons, though I do recommend downloading them if you want to ensure retaining access to the playthrough long term.
(We'd appreciate you not re-uploading them publicly elsewhere, though!)
Thank you so much for supporting PlayFrame, and we hope you enjoy the series!

One thing that still cracks me up is that they got decently far into production without casting Jack Black, and based the main character off him. When looking to cast him, someone at Double Fine just said," Why don't we just ask Jack Black? He might do it." and he did. Also, yes, those are Jack Black's real hands on the title screen.

ive played this before and totally forgot that jack black got isekai'd before it was cool

This rocks

It was in the middle of Atoma World Tour and I just happened to be on vacation in Gothenburg attending Machine Head live show. Then suddenly while browsing internet in my hotel room I notice that Dark Tranquillity had a show nearby the day before my departure. That was one hell of a happy surprise. Couldn't understand anything Mikael Stanne was saying between the songs (he was at home and was speaking swedish of which I new 2 words maximum), the club was relatively small, the whole show felt equal measures magnificent and cozy. You could even say they managed to "merge the mundane and the magic", which is a song they did perform.

Can't wait for the next one

I can already tell I'm going to love this game because I love any game that fully leans into an aesthetic
Lars Gottlieb
"Lars is a great leader" o.0
Gothblin
Dark Tranquillity in Gotherburg must've been one hell of a gig!
Jesse Phoenix
Oh hell yeah! This is gonna be great =D

YOUNG JACKBLACK! AHHH! NOSTALGIA! Love this game so much, one of my favorites of all time, have 100% it 5 times. (Including achivements) I wish it was more popular. :) Want a sequel so badly.

Rockin' Dan is adorable! Weirdly one of the things I'm most psyched about is the chance to have a (proper) recording of Ophelia's poem. It's just one more piece of lovely striking atmosphere among oh so many this game has to offer, but that one's always stuck with me

So, this game was Tim Schafer's baby, something he'd been wanting to get made for a long time. However he had to make some concessions to even get it bankrolled which I'll bring up if Dan doesn't when it's relevant. For now some other trivia: "Girlfriend" - The Nu Rock ( or referred to in-game as a "Second Wave of American Tween Melodic Rap Metalcore") song being played by the band, Kabbage Boy at the beginning when everything goes to crap is an original song composed by Peter McConnell just for this game. Dan pointed out Jack Black, Jennifer Hale and Tim Curry as voices so far, but we also have Lita (Played by Kath Soucie) and Lars (played by Zach Hanks) Lita's name comes from Lita Ford, a female vocalist and musician in rock and heavy metal. The family name Halford is based on Rob Halford, lead singer of Judas Priest. Lars' name is from Lars Ulrich, drummer for Metallica. Emperor Dolviticus was intially going to be voiced by Ronnie James Dio, however things changed and Tim Curry was brought in instead.

I have such fond memories of this game. Looking forward to reliving it!

I don't know if Dan is going to demonstrate it, but if you just let go of the camera controls for a while, the game will automatically rotate the camera to frame Eddie against some convenient piece of background art, trying to make something that looks like a heavy metal album cover.

Seeing my name in the backer list like *points excitedly!* Also this game just seems... so out there.
James Mullen
I have always been curious about this game, but never had the opportunity to experience it. I'm here for the experience, and thank you!
Christian DeRiemer
This is so metal! I tried to play this when it came out back in the day but had a lot of trouble with the controls (before accessibility was a thing), so getting to finally experience this rock opera is awesome! Thanks Dan and Carrie!!!

Guys, can we please keep up the commenting and liking like we do with youtube videos? One of my favourite parts of PlayFrame is reading the comments afterwards!

This is such a cool game, and I've been super curious about it, but never got a chance to play it. So I am so excited to see one of my favorite YouTubers do a full playthrough. Your content is great, and I adore the way you go through games. I can't wait to see what this game is like!
Username159
Sure a remaster would be amazing, but it's never happening if for no other reason than because it would require renegotiating all of the music licenses.

I joined your Patreon due to your announcement video for this game, but I didn't really expect to get into it - I was mostly interested because of how you sung Double Fine's praises, and I'd been wanting to be a patron anyway. Silly me, this is actually very entertaining! I'll be keeping up with this playthrough as much as I can. And I have got to watch the Psychonauts playthrough at some point...
Cedric Corthout
It was on Playstation as well, that's how I played!
Cedric Corthout
By Ormagöden, this can't be happening!
Prof. Walrus
How are you uploading faster than I can watch stuff! I'm still catching up to FF14 and am watching Astrobot! You have a full time job and another channel! 😂 Fantastic Dan and Carrie, love you to bits!
Søren Pedersen
Not sure if you know, but the sorting of the patreon names seem a little dodgy, some slight shifting around with some names for some reason. Looking forward to more already, though!
DemoniacDeath
ooh yeah \m/ Swedish MDM was my favorite before I kind of burnt out on music in general (still, whenever by chance I hear me a good riff - I headbang) I've even been to Dark Tranquillity in their hometown of Gothenburg Can't wait to hear some of my favorite bands in this playthrough :)
Kevin Lewis
I love this game and I think it's perfect for Dan's humor and vibes. It's a shame that it starts so much stronger than it finishes, but it's still an underappreciated gem and I'm really happy to get to spend time with it again via this playthrough.
KitiRama
40:00 Planet Moon Studios might have made this if they had been more successful after their first couple games.
misterEvildude
I've never once thought you'd play this game on the channel. Honestly, their best game imo. I can't wait to divest hours into watching this playthrough
Jordan Glazer
Also I know this playthrough is already finished but I hope the only collectable you went out of your way to get are the songs, just to once again rub it in Youtube DMC Rights.
Jordan Glazer
One of my absolute favorite games in terms of art direction, this is what made me a Double Fine fan for life. There's just so much creativity and imagination that I can't help but love it. Also it's been long overdue that Tim Curry is in on a Playframe playthrough. Maybe someday we will get Dragon Age Curry but till then rock on. Looking forward to more.
KitiRama
Any chance the next metroidvania on playframe could be Headlander

22:24 I'd prefer the Temple of Örmagöden, pronounced "Ermagerden" :D

This is gonna be GOOD! where's the like button? :p
Sandy
Okay but this thumbnail art and portrait rules
Naruhoodie
2:19 the impatient Jack Black hands while Dan rambles over the title screen XD
Nojh
Yeah!! I love Brutal Legend. Thank you for starting this playthrough!
Jessica Cheeri
Fantastic! I was just rewatching the Psychonauts 2 playthrough and I remember you saying you'd like to find some way to do that one. This should be good!
Jord Bijker
fine, have your blood money! Nah, but seriously, I love this game and what you've been doing over on YT, this is a good reason to go to patreon.
Boarph135
As much as I'd love a remake of this game, the reason why it's not a good idea to do a let's play on youtube, is likely the same reason why it can't be remade. It'll be a licensing nightmare for anyone who'd dare to try
justaperson
So excited to watch this later, thank you for sharing this with us! The special thumbnail art looks great too, it’s so fun and fitting!
Sara Winters
HECK YEAH! So hype for this one, it’s the only DF game I’ve never played because I didn’t own an Xbox.
Zorlock Darksoul
Hehe, I'm in the credits. And so are all of you! Thanks for putting this together, Dan. Looking forward to some brutality.
Mark Geroux
Love this game to bits, It's one of my favourite genres: all of them! For real though I have loved this game since it first came out and I wish we saw more like it, but damn that soundtrack while amazing is a major stumbling block. It came out in the height of the Let's Play era and yet is almost perfectly designed to to be devoured by copyright bots.
Phillimera
Thank you for sharing this game with us. I am excited to see what it has to offer. ☺️
Wavy
I always wanted to finish this game but I’m really bad at RTS type stuff, which cropped up a lot in the back half, but this game holds a very special place in my heart and I’m so so so happy you’re playing it! Thank you!
Gothblin
Thrilled I joined the Patreon. This game ROCKS! Big thanks to Dan for figuring out a way to get a playthrough out there. Shoutout to all the PlayFrame metal fans. My preferred daft subgenre is melodic death metal, although I also love gothic metal (unsurprisingly).
Naruhoodie
also get ready for a stream of new patrons <3
Duncan Hutchinson
Hot dang, look at those triceps!
Naruhoodie
let me be the first to say: rock on🤘
Réka
Jokes aside, very excited to watch!
Réka
Dan, you're causing chaos in the discord channels again xD
Nicholas S.
I'm not one to do this, but since this feels like an extra-special comment section today, I'm gonna do it: FIRST!
