Chapter 6 Ash vs Paul
“Ehh?!” Forrest gasped, recognizing the purple haired punk. “It’s you!”
“You know him Forrest?” Brock asked.
“He came and challenged the Pewter Gym, he battled Dad.”
“The Pewter Gym? That place was a joke.” Paul bragged that he simply used his starter to sweep the gym. “It was too easy.”
Brock and Forrest got annoyed. ‘This guy, he has the same attitude as back then, what a jerk!’
Paul ignored him and focused on Ash. “Are you really a Frontier Brain?”
Ketchum smiled. “I am, I am the owner of the Adaptability Symbol.”
“You sure don’t look like much.”
He twitched in annoyance. “Excuse me?”
“I saw you catch that Starly it was pathetic.” Twitch twitch twitch…
“And you can do better?” Paul smirked and revealed he had caught three Starly. Quickly he scanned each of them with a Pokedex. “This one will do.” He returned the one he wanted, and released the other two.
“Why did you do that?” Ash asked.
Paul huffed. “Those other two were weaklings, didn’t know any good moves at all.”
“That’s just mean!” Dawn snapped.
“There are trainers of all sorts.” Rowan explained.
“All Pokemon can grow to become strong, if you were more patient, you could have raised each Starly to be a different kind of battler.” Brock smiled at Ash.
“Are you an idiot?” Paul crossed his arms. “What’s the point of wasting time on a Pokemon with no talent at all?”
“I’m saying all Pokemon have potential in different ways.”
Paul shook his head. “Utter nonsense.” He pointed at Ash. “I’m still challenging you!” A smirk formed on his face. “Let’s see what kind of trainer you are.”
Ash took a breath to calm down. “Are you challenging me as a trainer or as a Frontier Brain?”
“Like it matters, I doubt you really are a Frontier Brain.”
“Very well then. We shall see if you are even worthy of a Frontier Brain challenge.” Paul glared at Ash. “What are the terms?”
“We’ll battle three on three, that’s the best way to test one’s abilities as a trainer.” Rowan offered the use of his training field.
“Very well. Ash called out his Starly. You watch this buddy.” Starly flew over and rested in the spectator seats.
“You aren’t using your Starly? Where was all that talk before?”
Ash blinked. “I haven’t trained this Starly yet, why would I use it to battle?” He learned from his past mistakes on that.
“If it had talent you’d be able to use it in battle right away.” Paul called out his Starly.
“Pidgeot I choose you!” He called out his fully evolved Flying type.
“Pidgeo!”
The fight was on, a true aerial battle. Starly tried his best, having swift moves like Aerial Ace and Quick Attack for swift bursts of speed to land hits.
Pidgeot was just on a higher level, stronger and faster. Paul’s Starly got smacked around by a fierce Wing Attack. Ash’s Starly watched Pidgeot move with such fierce grace and might, eyes sparkling at the fierce flier from Kanto.
Ketchum even called for a spin attack with Pidgeot’s Wing Attack, the resulting spin built up power and speed doing a lot more damage to the first stager. Even Paul was taken aback by the speed and power.
As the battle dragged on the opposing Starly couldn’t keep up, lacking stamina and endurance. “Pidgeot use Gust!”
“Starly counter it with Gust.”
Pidgeot’s Gust absorbed the other turning it into a mighty typhoon that slammed the smaller bird into the ground and knocked it out. “Pathetic…” Paul chastised his flying type.
“You did great Pidgeot, take a good rest.” After some well deserved head pats, Pidgeot was returned to his ball.
“Your Pidgeot seems to be well trained.” Paul said. During the battle Pdigeot was able to respond to Ash’s commands avoiding hits, and managing to even block critical hits.
Starly couldn’t wait to start his training under Ash.
Next up Paul called out his Chimchar.
“Alpha, I choose you!” The Houndour came out.
“So you caught him in the Johto Region?”
“I did! He’s the alpha of the pack, the whole pack is under my care.”
Paul shook his head. “Ridiculous.”
It was Chimchar vs Alpha (Houndour).
The two clashed with Flamethrower, and seemed to be evenly matched. “Get him with Flame Wheel!”
Chimchar spun, becoming coated in flames, he surged forth after Alpha. “Dodge it!” Ash called and Alpha ran, burning up Chimchar’s speed and momentum and being able to dodge the attack with a leap.
“Tch, use Dig now!” Chimchar burrowed under ground, Alpha losing sight of him.
“Be careful Alpha!”
“Too late!” Paul snapped and Chimchar burst from the ground and hit Alpha dealing super effective damage.
“Chim char char!”
“Houn!” The fire/dark type cried out in pain.
“Dig once more!” Chimchar dove back underground, making a couple of tunnels surrounding the Houndour.
He popped up over and over like a game of Whack-O-Mole. “Don’t track him with your eyes Alpha, use your nose!”
Alpha obeyed, using his strong sense of smell. Odor Sleuth! With it he was able to identify Chimchar. When he came up for an attack, Alpha was able to dodge it and counter it with a Bite.
Chimchar was knocked back. “Use Scratch!” The fire type went forward only to be met with another Bite, causing him to flinch. “Ugh Dig now!” Chimchar went back into the hole.
“Alpha aim Flamethrower into the hole!” He obeyed, dumping a large amount of flames that surged through the connecting tunnels, only to erupt from the other holes with Chimchar in tow.
“Char!”
The battle was blazing, neither fire type wanting to give up. “Alpha use Flamethrower!”
“Take it Chimchar!” Paul demanded. The fire monkey got up and took the blast, his little tail flame glowing brighter after a bit. “That’s it!”
“What’s it?”
“Flame Wheel!” Chimchar surged forward his flames even bigger than before. It hit Alpha hard. “It’s over!”
“Alpha get up!”
Much to Paul’s surprise the Fire/Dark type was able to stand. “Tch, not strong enough.” Paul seemed really angry for some reason.
“Let’s bring this battle into the dark, Alpha use Smokescreen!” Alpha exhaled a cloud of thick black smoke that covered the battle field.
“Trying to hide won’t save you.” He had Chimchar fire wildly into the cloud of smoke hoping to hit the Houndour sooner or later. This was bad for Chimchar who had already taken quite a bit of damage. He was burning gas fast.
When the smoke cleared Alpha was gone. “Where did he go?”
“Did you forget Chimchar made plenty of holes that can be used.” Alpha sprang up and used Bite on Chimchar.
“Ugh, Chimchar use Dig.”
“Alpha use Flamethrower!” Before the fire type could dive into the ground, he was blasted away by the flames.
“Chim…” He fainted.
“Pathetic!” Paul returned the mon to the ball. “I’ll deal with you later.”
“He used Ash’s Flamethrower to power up his Chimchar’s flames, but he lost steam because of the Smoke Screen. Ash took control of the field and adapted to the changes his opponent made to it.” Rowan analyzed.
Next up was Elekid vs Ash’s starter Pikachu.
The battle was intense, and just like with Chimchar Paul made Elekid take attacks to charge up his own. “You are all about power with now flow or style at all.”
“Shut up!”
A clash of Brick Break and Iron Tail came, but Elekid had another arm, which came a Thunder Punch. “Spin Pikachu!”
“Pika!” Wham, Pow!
Pikachu was able to counter both attacks, following up with an Iron Tail to Elekid’s head.
The match ended in Pikachu’s favor with Ash being declared the victor. Paul growled and balled his hand into a fist. ‘Damn it, how did I lose to this loser…’ In his anger he released the Starly. “Get lost!”
“Hey!”
“That Starly was weak, I’ll catch another one, a better one.” The Starly flew off, as Ash’s Starly flew over and rested on Ash’s shoulder. “If you are really a Frontier Brain, I challenge you! I’ll crush you with the strongest Pokemon I have.”
“That’s right you challenged the Kanto League.”
“I’ve been through Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, gathering the strongest Pokemon I could find. I planned to take on the Sinnoh League as the final test before going after the Battle Frontier.”
‘He used the leagues as just training?’
“So name a time or place, and I’ll face you.”
Ash clapped his hands together. “Sorry, but you aren’t ready yet.”
“Excuse me!?” He snapped.
“My symbol can be used towards any Battle Frontier run. If you’d like to go through the proper channels I’ll face you as per the rules, but as a challenge like this I refuse.”
“Why?”
“Because you’ll lose, be it my Kanto Team, Johto Team, or Hoenn Team, you’d lose just as you lost now.” Paul was stunned. “You were right about one thing Paul, a three on three match is a great way to gauge an opponent and you just aren’t ready to face me as a Frontier Brain.” Since he beat him he earned the right to refuse a public challenge.
Paul was getting pissed. “If you’d like to prove me wrong, feel free to challenge me again. As a trainer I’ll take you on.”
“Tch, no way some punk is a Frontier Brain, I’m out of here.” Paul believed that Ash was lying about being a Frontier Brain and was just trying to have an out.
‘Wow, Ash was really amazing out there.’ Forrest couldn’t help but think. ‘Good, the stronger he is the stronger I’ll be when I beat him!’
“Are you really a Frontier Brain?” Dawn asked.
“Sure am, I can even show you my facility.”
They headed back to the base, and Dawn met Tracey. She decided to travel with Ash in style, and Ash’s facility gained it’s second passenger.
It seemed Ash’s battle with Paul left the boy extra revved up as Ketchum and Tracey were absent from lunch. “I wonder where they are?” Dawn pondered.
Forrest blushed, having a strong feeling he knew exactly what was happening right now. Bite! ‘Damn it!’

Dawn and Forrest work to catch some new Pokemon having some difficulty. Ash works on training his new Pokemon and they meet a Pokemon Bard. Nando enjoys a night on Ash’s fascility.

I'm realizing I never actually commented on this which is my bad. I guess it slipped my mind, but I'm here to finally share my thoughts on this chapter. Paul is such a tryhard. I'm glad to see Ash is able to quickly bring him down some pegs especially after dissing the Pewter Gym like he did. Brock and Forrest didn't seem to pleased to hear Paul talk down on them like that. Ash really gave Paul a quick defeat. For all his confidence, Paul lacks the ability to see others as worthy, and that was his downfall. He underestimated Ash despite Ash being a Frontier Brain and paid the price. Next chapter has me fascinated since Forrest getting a Pokémon wasn't something I anticipated happening. And we get to meet Nando which is nice. I hope Forrest doesn't get too pent up with that cage he's in though. lol
