I hear you, I've also got ADHD and a lot of trouble with executive dysfunction. I spent so much time myself while meditating going "Oh no, I forgot to count my breaths", "I'm doing it wrong!" and "Oh no, I'm hoping to get enlightened and that's going to stand in the way of doing proper meditation and actually getting enlightened - oh no, there I go again." Eventually I'd gone around on it so many times I gave up, and it stopped bothering me so much. One of the things I got from my current teacher is that the actual practice, the important part of meditation practice, is to keep on coming back to the practice you were trying to do. That idea helps me a lot.

Interesting! I learned to meditate as part of treatment for an eating disorder, and it really did help with decoupling emotional stimuli (stress, conflict, self-criticism) from compulsive symptom use (binging, purging, body checking). But it was rough going at first and I worried a lot about somehow doing it wrong. (I am, as I suspect Ayo is, a perfectionist with a high level of executive dysfunction thanks to a combo of anxiety disorder and ADHD.)

FWIW my late Zen teacher said that there are some people who really should not meditate - it can make things worse for some kinds of schizophrenics, for instance, to be paying *more* attention to their inner voices or hallucinations.
