Weirdly similar situation happened to me. I was going to Montreal for a job, working for the Canadian government. I am standing in the immigration line and I realize that I was never given a work visa. Here I am in Carhartts with six pelican cases of electronics behind me and the officer asks me "Business or vacation" . I had to fly home until the issues were sorted. My passport is still flagged more than 10 years later.
