It is the only proven thing to assist with the pain during the procedure. The numbing injection to the cervix and pain meds did not improve patients pain rating in a significant way.

If you get an IUD ask for anesthesia!!!! It is the only way I have it done. Otherwise it was the worst pain to happen to me.
