I think this is an excellent question with no good answer. Well, Jahx is the ultimate authority for "Monroe"; but even so, Greenwold had a parallel metal coin currency (chapter 7), so why not Earth? I don't think that digital currencies would work, because it has trust issues even IRL, and the ability to imagine mana-augmented computing would just destroy any residual trust in cryptography. (The prospect of quantum computing serves the same function IRL; even if you naively trust the people developing it, eventually someone would get it that would use it for counterfeiting.) But I think that a mundane currency would serve a useful purpose for mundane transactions, and if governments didn't provide one, then people would develop their own. With gold having pre-existing cachet, and the prior example of the gold deposit certificate, it would pretty easy for literally anyone (with sufficient public trust, industrious comrades, and other resources) to make their own currencies. They would all eventually settle at an exchange rate where you could get the same amount of mundane stuff either paying with crystals or using them to summon material to deposit. But then you wouldn't need actual crystals just to buy food or hire workers, lifting an artificial burden from the mundane economy.

Richard Reid

Energy Crystals represent real, palpable power. They can be converted into *anything*, from water to food to shelter. They can power the enchantments on weapons and armor, a stasis box to preserve food, heating and cooling for your home, or a water treatment plant. All of this is to say nothing of using the mana crystals you've earned to level up. The most recent chapter touched on the fact that not all spellcasters are created equal. Bob's flexing at tier eight, but a spellcaster devoted to the Divine School of Elemental Water, even at the peak of tier five, could give him a run for his money. The value of crystals is intrinsic, but of equal importance is the person using them. If that person and their services is in high demand to the extent that they're not able to meet it, others will step up, offering inferior services, but offering them *now* rather than later. That's what's been happening in Dharavi. As far as crystals degrading, while it's been mentioned, I don't think I've shown it. The sad truth of the System is that rule six applies across the board. Energy crystals replaced all the worlds currencies because everyone wants them. Their potential to become whatever one needs is the definition of currency, and their fungible nature outweighs any danger of their dissipating before use. While the financial institutions of the world screamed in fury, the fact of the matter is that they have lost their power to leverage the governmental bodies to bend to their whims. Despite appearances, Earth has already shifted to a 'might makes right' system of authority. The people administering the Dungeons are only able to collect their taxes because they're high level, enough so that they can enforce their will. While most of the governments of the world are spending their taxes in an effort to restore their societies, the reality is that they are doing so by force.

that is where different views and theories collide. fact is, in a society where everything is duplicable, any kind of currency that is not backed by the system can and will be forged. and no, currency that actually has physical value and practical use is preferrable for everyone but stock brokers and rich guys that are used to hoard money and assets while keeping them out of circulation :p to be honest, it is a dream come true that that vermin has lost its base of existence :p edit: as for the currency collapse. no, it will not be the same... because the pre ww2 currency you couldn't eat. (or at least, use it to fuel a summoning ritual that can cover your needs at a fixed rate...) basically, the system itself is guaranteeing the worth of the currency. sure, you can inflate prices for stuff, but go too high, and people just level up and get the skill to undercut you.

Anything that is consumable, breaks down over time and is easy to get would make terrible currency. It's value would fluctuate wildly for any large population. You would see first a massive wave of value spiking during the current set scarcity, but then the value will plummet as people begin earn more than they need. Bob said it himself he can and desires to eventually delve once a week, to cover all his expenses. This will cause a currency collapse similar to pre ww2 Germany as the more greedy flood the market with more crystals than are needed. It's why oil isn't used as a currency. A better system would be a fiat digital currency backed by the government possibly using untraceable cryptographic to allow for privacy (as governments and crime would need it, and human society doesn't work without a little crime and corruption.)

I kind of disagree. I think it's incredibly likely for them to drop all currencies and just make it mana crystals. It's value backed by itself and it's incredibly easy to get for literally anyone that wants it. Also in regard to the food banks and the such I don't think it's that monsters had interest in it so much as it was they were so massive. They had such huge levels and spawned in such massive quantities that must infrastructure was whipped out. I don't think most food banks would be able to take care of that. Especially with how many people actually needed it. Idk that's just my take on it though.

I can see that, but as a pure digital currency it is still more viable. We are almost to that point now.

I think it's because it would be in incredibly easy to either counterfeit of simple multiply using a ritual.

Ok, so it's been bothering me for a while. Why did all currency become valueless. I mean this in an economic way. I mean the usd is already valueless anyway as are all fiat currencies. Adding magic does not change this. Fiat currency would have easily adapted to this and why is everyone struggling with food there are vast banks of food storage that monster would have had no interest in. Tech still works so while magic crystals would eventually move everyone to a post scarcity society we would probably just make them extremely expensive crops, that are also a fuel source in the interim. Fiat currency would probably still exist
