Personally, I'm of the opinion that for the purpose of significance, it doesn't even matter who shot first here. Things had already boiled to a point that the matter of who exactly pulled the trigger first doesn't matter since both gunmen had already drawn their pistols. For all we know the "shot" could have been some powder someone sparked by packing it too much in their musket while both sides were ready and aiming. The significance of the shot isn't who fired it, it's that country and colony were officially at war, and that similar fights could come to anyone.
