His invasion is a disaster but with half his army gone, Arnold still refuses to retreat. While Governor Carleton, despite having twice Arnold’s numbers, consolidates rather than sallying out, a highly cautious and criticized choice.

When people talk about how it was okay for American military bases to be named after Confederates, I ask why not a military base named after Benedict Arnold? If we’re going to name military bases after traitors, we should name them after traitors who at least initially fought for the American side. Benedict Arnold’s service at the Battle of Saratoga not only shattered his leg, but his action turned the battle towards an American victory with a complete surrender of an entire British army. That victory convinced France to fully support the American revolt leading to the French fleet bottling up the British army at Yorktown, and to American independence. It might not be an exaggeration that without Benedict Arnold, America wouldn’t have won its independence from Britain. At the same time, if Arnold’s West Point plot succeeded, the revolution might have died. There’s a monument to Benedict Arnold (or at least his boot) at Saratoga. It doesn’t mention Arnold’s name, but calls him “The ‘most brilliant soldier’ of the Continental Army”. There’s another plaque to Benedict Arnold in London on his home at 62 Gloucester Place. It’s where he lived after the war until his death. That plaque refers to Arnold as the American Patriot.
