As easily as scientists attack new theories that fit the data better but disagree with what said scientists believe, as easily as atheists proselytize to agnostics, as easily as agnostics proselytize to anyone. Ones stated religion frequently does not mesh completely with ones actual religion. This goes at least double for many of the professionally religious.

Hey extra history is the “bitter theological feud” between the priests in Alexandria and the clergy in Constantinople the Monophysite heresy or is that something else? Was Emperor Theodosius the first still emperor or was the incompetent Theodosius the second emperor when Hypatia died?

I did mean in a literal way, and I guess the unsatisfying wall of "decree by his majesty king mob" was always going to be a major factor, but I was more thinking from the angle of how a group with a very specific narrative around their own historical persecution can even only a couple centuries afterwards be starting down the path towards persecutions itself.

How could they? Because like anyone else who seems fine when sober, it probably seemed like a good idea at the time because they really really felt like it. Theologically speaking, there is a distinction between what is called the "visible church" (made up of an organization and its people) and what is called the "invisible church" (made up of those who have surrendered their life to God). There is expected to be a lot of overlap, but the overlap is certainly not perfect, and the only one who knows the difference with perfect certainty is God himself, but people can take a pretty good guess based on whether the life as a whole (that is, not determined by any one action, but the course of their life) is defined by what is metaphorically described as "the fruit of the Spirit" or not. I'd say that it's of mixed use to guess who is in the visible church only, being suitable for little more than conversation and pointing fingers. Fact is, actions were taken, and actions have consequences and may require punishment. Given the actions shown here, it looks like a mix of people with fervent belief that's being twisted by fears of self-preservation and other people who were there because they wanted a group to belong to and weren't beholden to expected practices of a "changed heart", as they say. Does that help? Or was the "how could they" question rhetorical? Apologies for the lengthy reply if that's the case.

What motivated Christians to turn around and become so violent and determined to snuff out other religions when their literal founding history is a narrative about how that's a bad thing. How could the christian community so quickly come to follow a leader that embodied the exact impulses their own book decries and villainizes?
