Have you guys ever considered doing a So You Haven't Read of Sherlock Holmes? Also since you brought up Paddington I don't suppose you keep a marmalade sandwich in the office in case of emergencies?

@Pyrian: I suspect your second paragraph was why it lost. I'd further suggest that it's possible that Sophocles only got second place because he was a big name in the competition. All of that said, it's my impression there's a lot of less than stellar works that go into local art competitions, especially when the style of art is relatively new. It's also not that surprising that someone with a long list of works to their name has some that are less than amazing.

The playwright in question was Philocles, nephew of Aeschylus; FWIG, we none of his plays survived, and we don't know which one won that year.

So what play did Oedipus lose to? I don't really get Oedipus as a proper tragedy. His big crimes were committed unwittingly. His tragic flaw is... Persisting to seek out the truth? Ostensibly with the goal of stopping a plague?
