The Haitian Revolution - The Long Fuse - #2
🕑 Added 2020-01-24 18:31:00 +0000 UTCAcross the water, the French National Assembly debate a new document, drafted by Marquis de Lafayette, The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Little do they know that this document will ignite the fuse leading to the powder keg in Saint-Domingue. Hold on to your fancy Revolutionary hats because things are going to get absolutely buck wild. Alliances will be formed and break within weeks, laws will last about the same time, and while all this chaos is happening, a revolt is forming.

Something I forgot at the last video: Sugar harvesting was brutal. In harvest time, you had a window of just 72 hours before it went bad, and as the plantations wanted major profit, that meant they pushed their slaves to gather as much they can until exhaustion, then having to boil it within that time span. Shifts were induced, but the slaves were still worked to the bone gathering as many sugarcanes as possible and then having to boil it and refine it to edible sugar. It is small wonder that the French didn't focus much (if any) healthcare for the slaves, while just importing new ones all the time, especially round harvest time, which was prime time to make purchases.

We would probably reference in the same way the the 100 Years War series was tangentially referenced in the Joan of Arc videos. You can't really talk about one without the other, but they're also big and complicated topics so it's hard to find time to explain all of the intricacies in a single series (it's also why Hatian Revolution will be a 6-parter instead of the usual 5)
