Suggestion survey: call for shorter-scope topics!
🕑 Added 2018-10-23 13:59:59 +0000 UTC When it comes to the Extra History video schedule we are currently looking at early spring 2019, and writer/director Rob Rath is going to be taking some well-deserved paternity leave sometime around that season! Anticipating our need for flexibility and our desire to make even more patron-chosen topics as fully realized Extra History videos, we are looking for suggestions for shorter series (2-3 episodes).When we have our next poll in November, we'll end up picking the top 2 winners to fill out the schedule block after the Irish Potato Famine airs. (The plan, currently, is to still have a Lies episode in the schedule but it would cover both of these shorter series, one at a time).
While the following list is not at all intended to bias anyone as to what they should pick, here are some very general ideas to consider if you are not sure about what a smaller Extra History series would look like.
- Specific cities (as opposed to large countries/regions)
- Influential (but less widely known) people
- The history of a particular object or invention
- Oh, here's a playlist of the types of one-offs and mini-series we've done before!
- Any other topics that seem like they could potentially be "one-offs" will most likely still work as a 2-3 episode series. One of our biggest challenges in making Extra History is having to figure out what to cut, not just in order to tell a cohesive story but also because 7-10 minutes per episode really isn't enough time.
Some notes about your suggestions:
- Submit between now and 11:59 AM Pacific standard time on Saturday, October 27. Only one suggestion per person please! Multiple suggestions from the same person during any given survey period will be manually removed.
- If a suggestion we encounter only has enough research material/production scope for a one-off episode instead of a full series, we file it in a separate list to reference later when we are planning to schedule a one-off episode between series (this is true for every survey we do).
- Anything that happened or started before 1920 is fair game to suggest. We typically don't cover more recent events, unless we're working with sponsors who can provide more documentation about that historical topic.
- We have a ratio of 2 suggestion surveys to every 1 voting poll. So if/when we ever do a theme for the survey, that theme will appear twice in a row. The results of both surveys are collected and added together when we determine patron suggestions to include in the next voting poll.

From founding Thelemia to the obscure workings of his arcane research & rituals, this misunderstood visionary could use a thorough examination considering his mainstream obscurity & his controversial practices/beliefs. well yeah, so has much of the other content covered by EC but that's not the point is it. The way Extra Credits covers the information makes it easy and fun for people to learn about. Great for my younger siblings who cant stand to sit through a lot of the historical docu-series that I normally watch on YouTube

I suggested Takeda Shingen. Ever since Extra History mentioned Takeda Shingen in the Sengoku Jidai series, I am fascinated to learn how much of an impact he had in this period and why he is remembered well in Japan, so I would like to hear what Extra History has to say. I hope he fits in 3 episodes, don't know for sure.

I went with the story of Leo Africanus. Born in Granada right after the end of the Reconquista, traveled to Mali, went on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople, got taken as a slave and served under the Medicis at papal court right at the beginning of the protestant reformation and the reign of Soliman the magnifiscent. It's crossover time!

You know, it's curious. It was the Saragarhi short episode what got me to become a Patreon, and since then, I have suggested Carrión and the Cagayan Battles a few times. This one would be no less. A series of small skirmishes in the Philipines between spanish soldiers, and japanese and chinese pirates (inclusing ronin veterans of wars from the Sengoku period), that resulted in a victory of 40 soldiers, against a fleet of around a 1000 pirates. Probably the first of the videos you would have it occupied talking about the short history of the Spanish Empire in the islands until the moment, and the life of Carrión, but the shortness of the encounters would make it perfectly fit in those 2 or 3 videos.
