How about the Great Depression of British Agriculture? Eliminating tariffs and shattering an entire section of the British economy would qualify as a "disaster." Not to mention it's a great way to examine the benefits and disadvantages of free trade.

The Disaster of the 98: The end of the Spanish-American war brought a crisis of identity to the whole of Spain. Not only had shown the lack of it's military in a succession of clumsy defeats that shouldn't had happened so easily, but it also meant practically losing it's empire and it's national pride. It brought Spain from being a world player to an isolated nation, that not even today, had been able to recover any semblance of international recognition. It brought also a cultural renovation with the Generation of the 98, that began exploring all the questions about spanish society that had been practically ignored before. It brought a sense of dread and pessimism about the future, and changed the view of spanish society about itself. A change of view that's still present even today.

I decided to stick with Islamic Iconoclasm. I know this maybe a controversial topic but, I think it is important to recognise what has been lost in terms of the art that showed the history of the various cultures that existed before the rise of Islam.
