Yeah, I feel like Iwo Jima was somewhat more important not only for the bombing range but also (despite the losses) for the moral boost to the American troops

Thinking through these episodes, a lot of the major events are covered (e.g. Seminal Tragedy, Arsenal of Democracy, etc). I was looking up some of the tragedies of WWI, and I found a genocide in Kyrgyzstan that I have never seen mentioned ever in any history textbook - it's called Urkun. As an idea, relating to what Extra Credits discuss in relation to other fronts of WWII, why not have a series on the series of genocides and battles of both (though surprisingly more in the former) world wars that are criminally overlooked...

Actually the battle of Saipan was not that important and decisive......however, it could be a good morale boost if they said that it is.

Richard, not actually understanding what you are asking. Could you rephrase it perhaps? Anyway, the phrase "4th Marines", when in the context of the US Marine Corps (as in the case here), refers to the 4th Marine Regiment NOT the 4th Marine Division (the unit they were trying to refer to). In fact, they get this correct in the latter half of the video when they are talking about the fighting of the "6th Marines", i.e. referring to the 6th Marine Regiment which is one of the 3 Marine Infantry Regiments of the 2nd Marine Division.

Would "The 4th Marines" actually mean something different than "The 4th Marine Regiment?" Such as instead refer to a unit or something other than a military force?

Just an FYI the phrase "X Marines" refers to the "X Marine Regiment". So you saying ~5:36 "The 4th Marines..." is not really accurate as it refers to the 4th Marine Regiment, a regiment reformed in February of 1944 as part of the 6th Marine Division after the original is destroyed on Corregidor. You should be saying the "4th Marine Division" as they were the ones landing there on Saipan.

I am looking forward to seeing this series in the near future and hope to see other campaigns in the Pacific theatre be done in the future. While I don’t think any one campaign alone is crucial to winning a war it would certainly give the American war leadership an insight into how Japanese civilians would behave towards our troops during the fighting and what might be faced in Japan itself.
