The Haitian Revolution: Listen to the Voice of Liberty
They all attended a secret Vodou ceremony, conducted during a tropical storm. And when the enslaved people returned home, the rising began. Though free people of color were already pushing for greater rights, the dynamic had just changed—St. Domingue was now witness to the largest slave revolt since Spartacus. The conflict would continue 13 years and become a proxy war for colonial powers—but against all odds, the rebels of Haiti would emerge with their own nation.

This series will explore the chaos of the Protestant Reformation through the lens of the ideas that shaped it, showing how questions of the soul set Europe alight and turned brother against brother. But it will also explore women reformers who have only recently captured historians’ attention—from political patrons like Marguerite de Navarre to academic debaters like Argula von Grumbach.

You know, that could actually be a good argument for NOT voting for the Protestant Reformation; it leaves open the possibility of later giving any of these elements (the Hussites, Marguerite de Navarre, etc) the more focused attention they deserve.

Wrote a report on the Mexican revolutions way back in elementary school. Would love to see EH do a series on that tangled mess, but all of the above sound interesting.

I know this is revolutions but i really hope you guys do a series on the 1837 rebellions of canada! Theres alot of interesting stories and battles hidden in there and you guys still lack a series on Canada :p

Even Chinese communism party and chairman Mao Zedong regard Sun Yat-sen as the pioneer of Chinese revolution. His mausoleum and memorial hall remain intact even during the notorious cultural revolution. Today, still a lot of roads are named Yat-sen (or 中山 Zhongshan) in China and chinatowns around the world.

Wow close race. Though I guess I should be used to that by now. I'm not surprised neither of my suggestions (Corsican Revolution, nor 2nd Industrial Revolution) are up there but it'd be nice to see an oddball option make it more often.

It's a Shame that the Russian Revolution isn't Included in this List, Considering how completely that Event changed the World. I Guess Sun Yat-sen will do for now. Or maybe Pancho Villa. There's an argument to be made for the whole "Protestant Reformation" period to cover anything from about 1415 to 1648.

Extra History
For some additional context, we usually get 150-200 suggestions sent in, and we don't remove duplicate topics--if 15 people suggest the Haitian revolution, or if any of those people send the same suggestion each time they do the survey (in a given survey period), then it will naturally have a higher chance of being picked than other suggestions. Currently Rob Rath is picking topics based on a combination of random selection from the list, as well as manually reviewing the list and seeing what people are most interested in. Hopefully that helps! Luck really is a huge factor. I've seen some Patrons who have only been supporting Extra History for a single week, get their topic picked in the next poll, while other Patrons don't see their topic picked until 2+ years in. Another thing to consider is that it's only been within the past 6-ish months that we started basing the polls off *multiple* patron suggestions--for a very long time, we were only incorporating one patron suggestion in each poll, so it took longer for people to see their suggestion pop up. The last few polls we've done have been entirely patron suggestions. Your patronage up to this point is very much appreciated, but unfortunately we can't change our current selection system too much due to the sheer number of patrons we have, and we understand if you're not happy and need to cancel or change your patronage level. --Belinda

YES, YES, YES - Haiti has finally made the poll! Fellow EH fans, I cannot emphasize ENOUGH how important the Haitian Revolution was to Western History, despite how it's only fairly recently been getting the mainstream attention it deserves. As much potential as the other topics may have, I REALLY encourage you all to treat yourselves to some learning more about this very complex and epic story - a very crucial turning point, in the fall of France, the rise of abolitionism, and of the British Empire, and of the path of the United States, to say nothing of being (arguably) the only truly successful slave rebellion in modern history. Vote for the Haitian Revolution!

Tangentially, speaking of Jan Hus: Jan Zizka was a real interesting general from the Hussite Wars who doesn't get that much attention. I mean, revolting against the state (And Sigismund... who's an interesting character) and the Catholic Church; the Bohemian revolutionaries lacked knights, but they trained peasants with a discipline and faith regimen, armed them with early uses of flails (previously farm tools) and pikes, as well as crossbows and a really early use of firearms, as well as very early mortars for harassment. They then employed said peasants ability to navigate bumpy roads by armoring wagons and driving them in trains... they would deploy them at a high point where they could, circling them into "wagon forts". They would harass the enemy with mortar fire, causing the enemy knights to charge. They would then shoot out the horses, and since dismounted knights were armored in horse full plate, which was specialized and not made for movement on foot as much, after a charge was over they'd open up the fort, and everyone would run out with flails and pikes and beat the knights to death. I mean, not to mention Jan Zizka was a practically undefeated general, they fended off against numerous crusades from church, and while having one eye for his career, he lost his other eye and still kept winning, only to be killed eventually by the plague. It's great stuff. Would highly recommend the book "Warrior of God: Jan Zizka and the Hussite Revolution" by Victor Verney. That stuff could be a series itself to be honest.
