Patron Post - Implementing Pregnancy and "Random"/Area Order
🕑 Added 2024-09-25 17:00:13 +0000 UTCFor this month's patron only post, I wanted to show off some future plans, talk about plans for implementing pregnancy, and how I'm figuring out how to implement pregnancy for as many characters as possible.
I've been working primarily on making scenes for existing characters that had to be cut from v0.2.1, so no new character intro this week.
When I started developing Waifu Wonderland for a public release, I had wanted pregnancy, but didn't build it with pregnancy entirely in mind. Knowing how popular the pregnancy mechanic is, I'm working to implement it for as many characters as possible. But since I didn't setup the game from the start with it in mind, it's created some problems.
Problem 1: Scene Diversity -
The biggest problem with trying to include pregnancy for every character, is that it limits what kind of scenes I can implement. Most characters only get the one scene, and to implement pregnancy, it needs to at least be vaginal sex. I can justify things like pulling out and still getting pregnant by having a low pregnancy chance, but I can't be like, "They got pregnant," if they have a blowjob scene, like Ms. Hartley.
When starting the game, I was trying to have a good number of different types of scenes. I didn't want it to feel too formulaic or predictable what kind of scene you were going to get. Since it seems like basically every game is like, you get an HJ, then a BJ, sometimes a TJ/FJ, then vaginal sex, then sometimes anal, and sometimes a group scene. Usually in that order. It's very predictable and a can get a bit boring. So I wanted to avoid that. But with the addition of pregnancy, I've been kind of regretting not just giving everyone a sex scene. Since it's looking like some characters just wont be able to get pregnant because of it.
Fixing the problem -
To fix this problem, I've been making sure that every new character gets a sex scene. I'm still trying to diversify the positions and at least try new angles, but I'm primarily just planning sex scenes for all new characters now. Then for older characters without sex scenes, I've been reworking the ideas so that they get a sex scene as quickly as possible. Luckily, most of the characters without a vaginal sex scene were already planned to have more than one scene, but the one exception is Ms. Hartley. She's given me a lot of problems implementing and I don't think she's a very popular character. Given the current time constraints to get the game out before I move, she may be the one character I can't ever implement pregnancy for.
Problem 2: The Lore -
Since I wasn't expecting to have pregnancy, I wanted to include reasons why characters weren't getting pregnant, even though you're cumming inside. I thought it wouldn't make any sense to be doing constant creampies and not have anyone get pregnant, but I also didn't want to do condoms all the time. And doing a pull out is a lot more work and honestly I like creampies way more, so I wasn't planning on doing too many of those either. So instead, I had characters mention that they can't get pregnant or are on birth control. Birth control is never 100% effective, so for those I can just make it a lower chance, but for Akari and Shiori who say that they can't get pregnant, it's been a real problem. Then with Rinko and the working girls making you use a condom and being on birth control, it wouldn't make sense for them to get pregnant either. Then lastly, there's the lab characters. Because of how the story works, it wouldn't make much sense for them to be able to give birth like normal, or for the government to take the baby and pay you. And you can't just have a limitless number of babies sitting around your apartment.
Fixing the problem -
There are some things I can do to fix some of these problems though. Let's start with Akari.
Akari -
She implies that she had her tubes tied in her scene. So I had to think a lot about how to get around that. It is a reversible procedure, but she would need a very good reason to do it. Luckily, I hadn't implemented her daughter (Minori) yet. And that's when I got the idea to have a short storyline involving both Akari and Minori. Basically, Minori wants to go to college but doesn't have the money. To save up and make some quick cash, she asks you to be her breeding bull, so she can make enough money to go. Akari overhears this conversation. Minori has been your friend for most of your life, and you're not sure if being a professional breeder is something she should do. Then Akari will approach you and tell you that she overheard and says that you should be her breeding bull instead. She'll get her procedure reversed so that she can be the one who raises the money for Minori's college instead. You then decide which of the two you want to be able to impregnate. I thought that this would be a good reason for Akari to do something fairly drastic. I also wanted to have more decisions with some weight to it that isn't reversible or anything. You'll still be able to sleep with both, but you wont be able to impregnate both.
Rinko -
Rinko seemed like a tricky one at first. I've said in a lot of posts that she's both on birth control and makes you use a condom, and is the type of girl who would quietly take care of an accidental pregnancy so that it didn't affect her career. But then I realized that none of this is in the actual game. However, she does still make you use a condom and mentions not wanting to get pregnant. So after thinking about it, I decided that the best way to go about it, would be to give her a new scene where you can do it raw. She can still be on birth control, so the chance will be very low, but it would be possible. If she gets impregnated you can then have the ability to talk her into having it for the money. Which I think would make for an interesting thing that would make Rinko somewhat unique. However, I'm going to be leaving this up to a poll. The next poll is to decide on which side characters get a new scene, and Rinko will be one of the options.
The Working Girls -
It's literally their job to have sex with people for money, so them getting pregnant was a hard one to figure out. They're getting a new scene though, so I had something to work with. What made it a bit trickier, is that I had originally planned on having their next scene be an anal scene. Since I think having a full "menu" of options made sense for a working girl. Sandy especially is one of my personal favorite characters though, so I did want to be able to justify being able to impregnate her. In addition to the pregnancy problem, with the addition of random characters, the working girls don't have much of a purpose anymore. I made them so you could get easy exp by spending money. But with random characters everywhere, there's no real reason to spend money on them. Especially since I had made their scene to be impersonal by not showing their whole face. Then I thought of the perfect solution to both of these problems. There can be a special package called "The Girlfriend Experience." Not only will she let you cum inside without a condom or anything, I can also make a scene that's more personal and actually show their full face. Since they're not making you wear a condom, you can impregnate them. As long as you promise to come and see them in 7 days so they can get back to work. Since it's a full experience, I'll have it cost a lot more, but also give a lot of exp. Since you're having raw sex with a working girl, I've also considered adding a chance of contracting an STD when you do this, but I'm still on the fence about it. At the very least, the hospital needs to be open so you can get it treated. So that wouldn't happen until that opens.
Lab Characters -
The lab characters are still the most problematic. I don't have a good plan for them. The best I've come up with so far is... don't worry about it. They can get pregnant and you get paid like normal, and no attention is drawn to it being weird. That's the lazy way out though, and I really don't want to do that. It also creates a big problem for the world in general. These babies would be effectively half human and half EDB. In Hitomi's case, half demon. Having these half human hybrids just kind of running around would make things extremely problematic if I make other games set in the same universe. Unless I just kind of ignore that part and pretend they're all normal babies, but again, that's the lazy way out and I don't want to do that.
Other ideas I've had could maybe be a bit weird and potentially jarring. Like one where they get pregnant, but then can "absorb" the baby instead of giving birth to it. Or maybe instead of actually being pregnant they get pregnant with some kind of extra energy they absorb instead. So you can impregnate them and get the pregnant scene, but not have to actually have the baby. Another was that you have the baby, but then they get sucked back into their own dimension when they're born. But that feels potentially a bit too cruel. To have unspecified number of babies just immediately being sent to other dimensions. In all of these cases you also couldn't get paid for the pregnancy like you can others. So I'm still brainstorming ideas to try and implement it in a way that makes sense, ensures you get paid like all the others, isn't potentially too jarring, and doesn't contradict the current lore or storylines. None of these take into account Almiranda either. Being in the lab means that there needs to be something talking about it. Since Dr. Hikari wouldn't just ignore the fact that you've impregnated a being from another dimension. So there needs to be more. I'm sure I'll come up with something eventually, but for now it's still a problem.
Shiori -
Shiori is another tricky one. She can't get pregnant because she's both too old and I had always had the idea that she was infertile. I had considered opening up the option after completing the pregnancy storyline, since that storyline is all about creating a drug so that infertile women can get pregnant. But doing an initial test like that and then suddenly having another character using it doesn't make much sense. Stuff like that needs to have wider studies, and on top of that, I don't see a reason why Shiori would suddenly know about the drug and want to get pregnant so much that she would even use it. So she's just not going to be able to get pregnant. I considered changing it so that she doesn't say anything about not being able to get pregnant and just implementing it, and if she was literally the only character without pregnancy, I probably would have. But since Ms. Hartley also can't be impregnated because she just has a BJ scene and at least as of now Rinko can't be impregnated, having another feels okay. If Rinko's scene wins, I may still go back and retcon it so Shiori can be impregnated though. Since I wouldn't want literally one character to not be able to get pregnant, even though they have sex. A mating press even.
Ms. Hartley -
And finally we have Ms. Hartley. This is the one I can't do anything about. She has to have another scene. But I can't make a new scene for her until the MMC story is finished, and even then, that comes with another problem. Since if she gets two scenes, then there could be the expectation that all the other MMC characters also get extra scenes. If it turns out that Ms. Hartley is the literal only character without pregnancy, and I have time to make an extra scene for her, then I'll add one in. However, this would be the absolute last thing I do for v0.3. I had a lot of issues with implementing Ms. Hartley, and I don't think she's a very popular character because of it. So I wouldn't spend the time to make a new scene for her until the very end.
"Random" Order -
Since this is a patron only post, I wanted to talk a bit extra about plans for implementing new "random" characters as well as including new areas.
I've decided on a rough order to include random characters, to coincide with the implementation of the Hospital and Office. Let's go into the order I currently plan on implementing the random characters, and why.
1) Random Beach Babe - After a lot of consideration, I've decided to do the random beach babe first. Mainly because the beach is accessible and has literally one character there right now, Alicia. It's a weird empty area, and doing the random beach babe will fill it out and make it so it's effectively done. I'm going to be doing a lot more different variations of beach babes than I did for any of the other random women so far too. That way it can feel like the characters are a little more unique and I can fill the beach with more of them without them just being too similar. So I'm planning on doing at least 2-3 types of bangs and 2-3 hairstyles. I have a few ideas, it just depends on how they end up looking. That way I can mix and match. Then of course they'll have the 3 skin colors with white, tan, and dark skin. And then a normal bikini, small bikini, and a one piece. I had considered making the combination random. Since I know I can do that with images, but I have no idea how to get different parts of the sprites to be randomized and match the randomized image. So it'll be set variations. There's just going to be an absurd number of variations. Even with just 2 bangs and 2 hairstyles, that's 4 variations for each type of hair, x3 for each of the three skin tones for 12 total, then x3 for the three different swimsuits for 36. And that's before rares and uncommons. It will be the biggest set in the game, except for maybe the office ladies.
2) Random Nurse - After the beach babe, I'll be doing the random nurse. That way I can open the hospital. The Hospital was added to the game because in the lab storyline, you were originally going to wake up there after the accident. But to get the lab storyline out faster, I changed it to being a small medical bay in the lab. Which makes more sense anyway. They couldn't have an accident like that potentially become public. Anyway, since the story reason for it existing is gone, I've been cutting a lot of the content from the area and putting it off to the side. I had considered cutting it entirely, but it's been teased in game, and I don't want it to just kind of disappear. Besides, who doesn't want to bang a sexy nurse? So when the random nurse gets added, the Hospital will be opened up. Like the beach babe, I'm planning on doing more unique variations for the random nurse. Since the random nurse is likely going to be the only character in the Hospital. So I wanted to ensure there would be some variety. I'm not going as crazy as I will for the beach babes, but I'm planning on doing 2 different hairstyles, some with glasses, and then the 3 skin colors. I may change the nurses outfit color too, but I'm not sure yet. There's only going to be maybe 4 spawns, so I don't want to go too crazy.
3) Random MILF - And then we've got the random MILF. I pushed her down here because there's just already a lot of MILFs in the game, and there's going to be more unique MILFs added in. So it's hard to make it a priority when there's already so many other options. I do want to have at least one to help fill out the world though.
4) Random Office Lady - Then lastly we have the random office lady. She's going to be last because she'll be added with the office building, which will be the last bigger update for the game. I don't want to open the building until everything for it is done, and I want it to be added towards the end. With it is going to come a new tiered job story, and then I'll need to add stuff for you to buy to go with the increase in income. So it's going to be a good amount of stuff. I want to fill out the rest of the world before adding this in though. The current plans for the office area are more balanced for my full vision of the game, all the way up to the mansion tier. It also included a lot of unique characters and individual storylines for as you worked your way up the corporate ladder. So it needs to be reworked. That's going to take a while too. It's just a ways off still.
v0.2.1 Tips -
Since v0.2.1 has released to all patrons now, I thought I'd give a couple of tips on ways to progress. If you don't want any tips or anything, then feel free to skip to the next section.
First off, you get an extra stat bonus if you're able to win against Almiranda in the intro to the lab storyline. Once you start the lab, you'll be locked in for a little bit and wont be able to seduce anyone until Almiranda. I'd highly recommend going around and getting all the stat buffs from other characters (like Akari) and unlocking the apartment before you talk to Dr. Hikari to start the experiments. If you're lazy and don't want to grind out money for the apartment, then you can do the lab intro before unlocking the apartment and get about half of what you need from it. But if you can beat Mirai, you should be able to beat Almiranda.
Also, since I don't think I've ever actually mentioned it, you can get a computer from the department store, and use it to work data entry and then eventually freelance. It's a much more efficient way to make money than doing the convenience store. It's a sort of simplified prototype of what the office job will be like. It still takes stamina, but it's right next to your bed, making it much faster to be able to grind out money. The fastest way to get the money for the computer, without doing the lab, is to do collectables. Just talk to the guy to the right of the convenience store so that they appear. Even just getting the visible ones, you'll be able to get enough money to buy the computer fairly easily.
Hopefully that helps!
What I'm Working On -
Lastly, I just wanted to talk a little bit about what I'm working on right now and how much progress I've made. Since this isn't a WIP post, I wont share any artwork that isn't done, but I'll show some that is done.
First I've been working on the new starter scenes. Kaori's is all done now and I'm working on Shiori's. While working on these I had an idea to create "ghost" variations of them, like with Goth Seika. I just think it would be weird if Seika was not only the only 2D ghost, but also the only character with a ghost variation. So I've been playing around with some other ideas.
First is a younger version of Shiori.
I just took the lines off of her face to make her look younger, and then I changed her dress to the color I originally made for her. In her official design, I decided to make her dress it black and pink, because I thought it made her look a little more mature. But for a younger version, the red works well and makes her a little more unique against her normal version.
And then while working on Kaori, I played with a few ideas, and ultimately landed on gyaru MILF Kaori.
I gave her a tan, changed her to blonde, changed her shirt to a leopard print shirt, gave her black pants instead of blue, changed her glasses to better match the new color scheme, and then gave her more saturated lips to better fit with the tan skin. I thought it was a fun contrast for her alternate version to be a bit sluttier and outgoing, rather than her normal, somewhat aloof, personality.
I haven't done one for Ayako though. I've tried, but nothing really looks right. I tried making her a gyaru, but that didn't look right. And I tried doing a goth version, but it didn't look that much different from her normal design. I tried doing an older version, but that didn't look much different or even particularly good on Ayako. I'd like to include one, but I'm not sure her design will really work with anything different enough to justify having a rare version of her. I imagine I'd have to do something like give her a new hairstyle or something, and that's way too much work. I don't want these variations taking away from other development too much.
Oh yeah, and I'm currently only planning on having one scene for each of the alternate versions of characters. I had thought about having which scene you get be random, but decided against it. I don't want to have to worry about a new scene having to fit for both versions of the character if I end up making new scenes for them. Doing every scene would also take up time I'd rather put towards more important parts of development. Once all of the alternate versions are in the game, I may run a poll at some point to see which alternate versions people like the most, and they'll get other scenes converted or something. But for now, just the one for each.
On top of that, I've been planning for the working girl's scene. Like mentioned above, I've decided to do a "Girlfriend Experience" as their last scene. When I originally planned their scenes out, I gathered references for my original plans, so I had to find something new for this one.
Then lastly I've been working on the design process for the random beach babe and the final lab character. I'm going to try something I haven't done yet, but have been considering for a while now. This post is getting long, so I'm going to go more in-depth about that process and how it works out in the next WIP post. I've also landed on which idea I'll be using for the final lab character. I like the direction it's going, but I'll talk more about her in her character intro.
Right now, the goal is to get all of the new starter scenes, the working girls scene, and the random beach babe implemented into v0.2.2. Along with the ability to unlock Ayako and Kaori if you didn't choose them at the start. Then also pregnancy for Ayako, Kaori, the working girls, and a static beach babe. With how big the random beach babe set is, and how I'll be implementing new story and unlocks for Ayako and Kaori, I'm not sure I'll be able to do it all in time though. At the very least, the new starter scenes and unlocks will be put in along with the working girl's new scene. The beach babe may end up having to wait until v0.2.3 though. As of now I have Ayako, Kaori, and Shiori's new scenes all made, they just need to be put into the game.
Focusing on artwork is usually what I do until it gets closer to a release. The artwork takes the most time, and I also never want a Rinko situation again. Where the game releases and ends up with a major bug, but since I already started working on the next version, I can't just patch it. So I'm just working on artwork until after a public release. That way if there's a major bug I missed, I can quickly patch it.
All Done -
And that's it for this post! I hope everyone is enjoying v0.2.1!
