The fight with Jiren mirrored that against Frieza back on Namek. Goku unleashed max Kaioken x 20, gets folded. Uses Spirit Bomb as a last resort. That failed, but led Goku to unlock a new form. Super Saiyan against Frieza and Ultra Instinct against Jiren.

Let's go! The episodes that broke the Internet. I can't explain how much I loved that first fight between Goku and Jiren. Technically it's some awesome moves and Goku shows off all his abilities. On the other hand, Jiren is terrifying and Goku has never had his ass beat like that.
