I mean, no? I've definitely read published works (like, with physical books, in a library, published decades ago) with similar levels of internal monologue that was written in 3rd-person. 1st-person has kinda fallen out of style in recent decades anyways. Not being able to switch perspectives is overly-limiting, so 3rd-person with italicized internal monologues is a reasonable compromise.

I mean I don't agree, but I see your point. However, I don't find it jarring either & Erios is right. All uses of 1st person is inner thoughts. His blue guardian robe bore the qi-refining badge, and his wicked grin promised trouble. Perfect. Just what I needed on day one. The sentence above makes it clear to the reader that this is inner thoughts, despite not having italics or quotations. From what I seen, all changes to 1st person are written within the rules. For this chapter at least. I'm not sure what books you've been reading, but 3rd person limited can have 1st person limited to dialogue and inner thoughts. 🤔

Eh, personally I didn't even notice it, so I doubt it's that jarring. As long as it's clear what part is the inner thought it should be fine. And honestly I don't even mind breaking standards as long as it's done knowingly. Following the spirit of "if you know the rules, you know how to break them". There was a story a while ago where the author was purposefully switching not just between first, second and third person, but also present and past tenses. Basically breaking every standard there is, but it felt fresh and interesting. Like looking at a surrealist painting after years of seeing only works of realism artists. That doesn't mean either one is bad. But there is plenty of room within art, which writing is a part of, for works that don't strictly follow every commonly accepted standard.

Yes! This time Impale them!

The specific way i phrased it and formatted it wasnt the point. The point is that you are objectively switching back and forth from third to first person. This is wrong by every standard of western literature. There is a reason you dont see this in published novels with professional editors and experienced authors. Because it is jarring as hell. Being able to write with that level of inner monologue is a property of writing in first person. Third person limited isnt done like that. >That was just what she needed on day one.< Would be a better example.

Erios909

I've purposely used inline italics for inner thoughts. ">What am I even looking for?< Xiulan wondered, but the need to verify Mei Chen’s wellbeing pushed her forward." I don't like this. I much prefer: ">What am I even looking for?< The need to verify Mei Chen’s wellbeing pushed her forward." With the stuff in > < italic.

Beelzy

Yes but there is no formatting or prose to indicate it is an inner thought. "Should I be using quotation marks?" Xiulan wondered. The format of straight inline thoughts, usually shown with italics is only used correctly in first person perspective. I get you use AI as a productivity tool for formatting but you really should be more careful about that stuff. It isnt perfect. Im loving this story I'm only commenting because it was jarring and threw me out of the immersion. Snippet Example Start: 'Oh no. Xiulan stared at Lei Shan’s smirk. This was not going to end well. His blue guardian robe bore the qi-refining badge, and his wicked grin promised trouble. Perfect. Just what I needed on day one.'

Erios909

The only first person used is in dialogue or POV inner thoughts? Which is valid usage of it. The bulk majority of the story is in 3rd person limited POV.

Beelzy

You kept switching between first and third person dialogue.

"Her own ‘qi-gathering’ market" "market" -> "marker"

I think they are waiting to see.

Thanks for the chapter, hope she get some respect instead of resentment for her actions.
