On the one hand I'm happy Mei Chen isn't dead. She's a remarkable character, and the innocent opposite to our resident patricidal cultivator. On the other hand, I really appreciate the boldness of straight up killing her earlier: it was a fantastic use of ratcheting up the tension after it had just lessoned due to Mei's imminent rescue. I think her living will make the story more complete, but I hope to see some serious conflict between them and perhaps with Mei herself. I don't think Xiulan will change her mind about her decision-making even if Mei lives: attempted murder is still just that. But I don't think Mei will see eye to eye on this, and Zang Wei might also have interesting qualms about everything. Very exciting!

Wooo! She's not dead!

Jonathan Wint

Well, she has not consumed the Hearts of her family for power. Cannibalism Works in Classic Daoism. Her dad was a great swordsman after all and her half Brother! ;) Yes I am being Evil but its still True!

Apoca

One question: why are they content to fight one by one? The father-son duo ganking up on her could have caused some real challenge. (Especially since Lin Jin is so active after almost dying not even a week ago)

Truth but Familiarity as they say breeds contempt and Distance Reduces the death rate . In my Area We have Black bear and we have no to little problem with them because we beat the crap out of idiots that try play with them and feed them ! Why ? Familiarity a bad idea with bear. You do not want them associating humans with Food or Safe. About 70 years ago we had one go Rogue and it killed over a dozen People. No Problems since then. Why? Bears did not change we Did. You feed a bear we FIND A REASON to put you in Jail. Bears must not associate humans with Food or Safety. Its that simple The Unspoken Policy good for humans and Bears... The same idea with Immortals makes sense.

This wasn’t the standard antagonist confrontation. This is the rare not waiting for silly monologues, “just kill them, solve your problem now” confrontation. The good stuff. And golden pills are something else, hey? I wonder if lack of blood/oxygen to the brain will have lasting consequences for Wei Chen. I hope not, but we’re still not out of possible heartache territory. Poor Zhang Wei. He just lost his entire family in one blood-red night. And apparently his only remaining big sis won’t even be allowed to stay in his life with this new path she walks. At least, for him, the Chaol Family’s vengeance will be directed solely at her. As always, thanks for the chapters! And SO much appreciation for dropping the whole bundle at once! <3

Ha, they do that anyway. Just look at any other cultivator story. They treat all mortals as expendable and kill them whenever they want to.

Jonathan Wint

Not to mention the possibility of them going Murder Hobo over a fit of Anger! As happened here!

TheOne320

But would it not be the choice of each individual who they convert? Who gets to decide that about all humans? Is there a Murim alliance that controls everything? In most stories all the sects are very individualistic and do not like cooperating. Normally, people just take whatever resources they want from others that are weaker than them. If events follow the story the MC knows, then in 4 years all the rules will be irrelevant as the country does not exist.

Jonathan Wint

It makes sense resources are limited resources to create and develop them. Be bad if every Immortal wanted to convert their loved ones, I mean we see it happening right here, She is trying to change her Maid into a immortal. If every Immortal did that they run out of resources to develop their own cultivation. And they need to keep people in awe and stop resentment to make them mysterious untouchable and thereby godlike. Nothing Godlike about pooping or peeing. So keep them unknowable untouchable and scary Awe inspiring.

TheOne320

Hm, I expected revenge, but not her killing everyone. I do not mind, but I hope she knows what she is getting into. Also what is that about cultivators not being allowed to interact with mortals? Who decides that and who enforces that?

FarFromLogic

I'm so glad she wasn't merciful or naive

Apoca

Well, that ended about that well as one could expect.
