I believe it might be TitanFall that you might be thinking of.

Erios909

I don't remember which mechwarrior it was, but there was one where when your mech blew up you ejected with a much smaller suit with a plasma gun and could run around; elis is basically in something resembling the small suit thing

"She didn’t want to waste her heat sink capacity on the regular drones;" Everyone else is playing Stellaris while Elis plays Mechwarrior.

Totally agree: boot camp fit thematically, made sense in the story, was set up, progressed character development, etc

One of the tropes that I actively hate is when soldiers are shown as basically soulless robots that just take orders and are completely rigid. But I did like how Erios909 portrayed boot camp, a petty good balance between discipline and the recruits still feeling human.

I'm more surprised to see Elis actually acting more human, it shows how much Alex has broken through her shell of "I'm here to kill." One would suspect that going into combat against an NAI (even with an NAI partner) would snap her back to training and reset that progress because of the nature of said training. The bond of Alex has proven greater than Elis' federation training.

Erios909

they are bonding

Yeah, I wish there was more focus on the aspect you are talking about instead of constant bickering. I also think that Elis interactions with Thea have more to do with her loose cannon personality than her being an NAI.

One has to take a sec to look at this from Elis's point of view. She is a relic Federation Marine who's sole duty was to hunt NAI with her squad. She now finds herself back in a familiar situation of hunting a NAI, but with the added twist of doing so at the request of a NAI with another NAI for support. Of course this entire scenario of going to chafe against everything she knows. Elis gets along with Blue because she thinks of her like a sister and has seen how she acts, but even that relationship isn't unshakeable. Blue being willing to burn a star nation to the ground as revenge probably terrifies Elis.

Tbh I actually like it. While I see what J was saying about the side plot pulling away from the main storyline and I agree the buildup was a bit underdeveloped, I think it’s still interesting to see Thea and Elis interact in a way that can develop their characters independently of Alex, even if the development is mostly poking at each other. Then again I’m also a sucker for explosions and a fight scene so I may be biased.

I agree. At the very less the there too much focus on Elis and Thea constantly bickering that you are not given time to care, and it just takes me out of the story. I expect at least Elis to have some professionalism, but I not seeing it. I wish there was a bit more build-up for this NAI they are trying to capture, instead of just going in guns a blazing cowboy style. There should be least some more thought put into this mission as the way they handle this NAI is setting precedent on how they will handle law breaking NAI like the one we are trying capture in the future.

Personally not a fan of this side arc. I don’t feel like I care about anything happening here, and find myself just scrolling through to find key points to keep up with plot :/
