I look at it like sci-fi space magic. I mean, nanotech is basically using robots to create shit on a molecular scale. What's not possible at that point? It's entirely possible to have then "forge" a new kind of steel or titanium using lonsdaleite as a crystalline base and coming up with a material so strong its nearly indestructible. Then using that to build your vehicle. Imagine combining lonsdaleite (crystal thats harder than diamonds) and combining it with somthing like tungsten, thats also damn hard and also incredibly light for its mass. You could easily combine those for a material thats impossible to break. It'd make for an amazingly light weight framework for a massive vehicle capable of carrying even greater mass. Then it's all just fiddly bits after that. Figuring out how much armor it needs, how many reactors it'll carry, where the resources will be stored, where the sleeping space and cab will be and so on. This is exactly why I love sci-fi. Literally anything is possible.

At least it’s not an MARV. That new command and conquer announcement has me feeling some kind of way.

Yeah I know. But there are several good explainations; the resources she's shown are categories, like DuraSteel is all ferrites, rare alloys are a mix of tons of different metal types, etc Its just in a form the fabricators can do elemental forging with because they can do fusion and fission inside them like alchemy machines, so maybe its converting stuff to whatever alloy is most beneficial for the usage/schematic, which could be heavier or lighter based on need. Like the air units probably use a lighter version of 'durasteel' than ground units to help them fly. :" D Then she also has mass compression/negation devices... like the multi-tool makes things lighter inside of it. Essentially shoving part of the mass into the immaterium. :" D The part about high-tech should have repulsor/anti-gravity tech... well humans had to go down the tech tree. They didn't get anti-gravity tech yet. They got far down the tech tree in other areas instead. Maybe some aliens will share their anti-gravity tech later :" D

Indy

that hurts my soul XD

You can't math the resource cost to weight because nothing would be consistent and I didn't math it to be consistent.

Cortex Resource Drone: 800 Durasteel = 24t Desert Crawler: 530,000 Durasteel = 15,901t + 4,500t cargo, so about 20,000t The Caterpillar is useless in this case because you don't need just cargo, but modules and facilities. They need space and volume; it's not just about shipping ore. But yes, I suppose you could put on 100 tracks and make it 'movable' on flat terrain without any elevation, extremely clunky and slow. It doesn't change the fact that it's a massive waste of resources. A movable combat force to claim the wreck and a solid industrial base to push out an even better industrial base, and of course, even more combat units would be a better investment at this stage.

You only need fortified ground if the weight per area of ground contact gets too high. These https://www.flickr.com/photos/codelco/5496615871/ can carry 400tons of rock, and there is nothing to stop you sticking 10 of them together for 4000tons of capacity. Perhaps some sort of land train. This https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/Bagger-garzweiler.jpg is tracked. It weights about 14,000 tons and is used to mine 240,000 tons of stuff a day.

Indy

I was looking forward to Factorio-like base-building :(. And I still think that even with magic space tech, you can't make a land vehicle the size of a NASA crawler that can deal with any kind of rogue terrain. Yes, you can make a street on the fly, but a crawler with that kind of weight needs more than just a flat terrain; it needs a fortified ground that can handle its mass, and a freaking small maximum elevation. The creation of the Fusion cells is the next problem. You can't make them 'indoors,' or at least you would have to ignore your own safety protocols regarding the minimum distance for producing them.

Eyes wide

Thanks for the chapters I'm addicted

Eyes wide

I'm really dying to get a blue point of view. I have a feeling he knows more about human origins and that they were ancients or pretty high up in the hierarchy. They all seem fascinated with making maybe they can't make new things which would make our MC highly valuable to the blues not just her tech but her as well. Also I'm hoping for a surprise when she gets inoculated maybe it puts her more in line with their biology but with perks 😅

So, the fortress is basically this thing? https://homeworld.fandom.com/wiki/Carrier_(Coalition)

Erios909

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zubr-class_LCAC I don't know... hover vehicle would have a hard time maneuvering if the terrain gets worse. Its not like the hover vehicle can fly, it needs near contact with the ground for the air cushion to keep it up, doesn't it?

Findell

That seems suicial to build a giant moving crawler on a world with giant sandworms. She should definelty be using some hover thing.

Nicolae

Does this classify as a double sigma?

JHD

Thanks for the chapter.
