Thx for the chapter

Nicolai Buch-Andersen

I don't find the basic training that implausible. It could easily just be Meltisar policy that everyone go through basic training, regardless of their future path. Perhaps that could even be mentioned by Thraker or the instructors at some point? I also like the idea of an arc that will let Alex grow as a person, without Nameless to fall back on. But I must admit that I find it a bit hard to care about all the interpersonal drama and 'practical jokes' after the high stakes of the previous arcs. Worse, I find it hard to believe that Alex would take it all that seriously, considering all the other trouble that's hanging over her head. I hope you will use the 'mail call' as a way for Alex demonstrate that she can still set things in motion to work toward her broader goals.

honestly i just googled it before planning the arc, the first result said that yes, OCS applicants had to complete a 10 week basic course, so here we are, turns out it was for the army, not navy lol

BTW, "the officers need to have been grunts first" is a trope from Starship Troopers (the book).

I suspect that the DIs are monitoring what is happening more closely that it appears. People with this passion for 'practical jokes' aren't that liked by instructors normally. Think what will happen if you have this kind of guy on a tiny ship for months. She could wreak moral. I think they are giving them enough rope to hang themselves.

Fortunis

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to find e out Nameless is Alex's avatar lol

it's a fictional universe, if they need basic training then they do :P i love the meltisar arcs, seeing Alex finding her own power, realizing she's capable without Nameless. character growth!

Vamperie

I agree with the basic training. It sets a standard everyone has to follow; and later down the line when she's in charge, has a better sense of where her limits are, and the point i see important is; she's getting to know more people! =^-^= Oh, and Thanks for the chapter!

Rainer

I disagree. Yes, in many current militaries, what they said is true. But in space, and in a militia, as Meltisar's military really is, be it naval or ground, you may need those combat skills, and you will definitely need the discipline she is learning. Also, she joined the Meltisar militia. She didn't join as a fleet officer necessarily. Think of it as a track. She is going to finish basic, then go down the fleet officer track. Other recruits might go down a ground forces track, or maybe special forces, or any other tracks their militia might have. I think you have done well, but I really dislike how whomever is pulling these 'practical jokes' is getting away with it. In the real military, unless everyone disliked someone, all of the others not aligned with the jokester won't tolerate it. They will band together, and they will bring the pain 10 times worse.

we'll just go with basic training is required for officers in meltisar too, unless they graduated from a rotc or something

EnderScroll

You don’t have to. I just thought it was odd unless you intended to make Alex a frontline gunslinger continuously engaged in ground combat.

Erios909

i don't want to delete the basic training arc because i spent a lot of time writing it xd She's supposed to go to the naval academy after basic training as per there conversation

Also I just wanted to point out an inconsistency I have been seeing in your military training arc. Giving Alexis previous experience in naval combat as well as Thraker and the admiral intention to train Alex as a successor she should have been accepted into the military as a commissioned officer. Commissioned officers are not required to undergo basic training and would have received a more streamlined combat training and more emphasis on logistics, strategy, leadership and coordination. The training you are portraying so far is something you would expect for the “grunts” or frontline soldiers. Frontline fighter have limited potential to ascend to leadership positions. This type of training is intended to not only prepare soldiers for combat but limit free thinking and instill unquestioning obedience to those up the chain of command. Since you are intending Alex to be in a sort of leadership role in the navy it seems really out of place for her to be trained as a boots on the ground soldier. If a captain or commander of a ship is in a situation where they need to pick up a rifle instead of directing ship-to-ship combat the battle is already lost.

I like this training arc much better than the traveling to Melistar arc, it seems like Alex is finally started taking initiative again as a protagonist and is getting some much needed training in combat and social skills. Although I say this I hope this donesn’t devolve into cliched and drawn out academy arc without Alex recovering her former strength. I like that the MC is making some self improvement but it Irks me that her sub cores seem to be leaving her in the dust and overshadow her as character. In her current state it is hard to see her as this rising NAI overlord with boundless potential she was portrayed to be in the last two major arcs and is just like your average teenage girl in this universe joining the military with slightly above average abilities cybernetic and physical abilities.

Sargent Very Pleased with Alex bet he making her a corporal or squad Commander.
