He chuckled, “I suppose I was, yes. I’ve taken my many responsibilities on willingly, but there’s no doubt that each has their own difficulties, even for someone as aged and experienced as me. “Of course,” he caught his colleague’s eye, and cautioned, not for the first time if Harry were to guess, “I would only remind you that no spell that can cause permanent damage is to be used.”
“I’m aware.” Snape drawled.
“Very well,” Dumbledore gestured for Harry to stand at the other side of the room, “If you wouldn’t mind?”
Striding across the room, he could feel Snape’s dark eyes boring into the back of his head. As he turned around, he found a wand already pointed at him, its tip glowing as a spell shot across the space between them.
Despite the animosity between them, it didn’t anger Harry. If anything, he expected such tactics. The entire reason behind the potion master’s presence there was to give him a taste of what he would experience against the nastiest of Voldemort’s Death Eaters, and the monster himself. The second spell, an Impediment Jinx, followed just as quickly and before finishing with another Bonebreaker. It was an efficient combo, the first meant to slow an opponent and make it that much easier to hit them.
Harry caught the last spell on a shield and returned fire with a chain of his own. Confringo. The spell wasn’t aimed directly at Snape, instead detonating against the ground just in front of him. The spray of rock and dust made it difficult to know if his ploy was successful. But he decided to assume it was as he followed it up. Depulso. The blue light cut through the haze and there was an audible grunt as it threw Snape backward into the wall, driving the air from his lungs. As he struggled back to his feet, Harry finished the chain. Expelliarmus.
Unfortunately, Snape was still a formidable duelist, and he sensed it coming before it arrived. The red spell splashed harmlessly against his shield as he straightened once more. As they stared across at each other, Harry saw nothing but genuine hatred in Snape’s black eyes.
Instead of bracing for the inevitable response, he pressed his advantage. His next spell shattered, Snape’s shield with a resounding crack. Ebublio. The blue light shot across the room only to hit harmlessly against the wall in a cascade of water. Had the professor been caught by the jinx, he would’ve been encased in a water bubble.
Taking the brief reprieve, Snape managed an attack of his own. Harry couldn’t help but notice they appeared a bit brighter now, a bit faster as they raced toward him. And the spell choice was borderline. A Black Flame spell that Harry dispelled long before it reached him, he studied more than enough to know that the flames were far more dangerous than a simple Incendio. It was followed by a Severing Charm that seemed to be deliberately aimed at his neck that he ducked beneath.
They continued, trading spells back and forth in a frenzied flurry, all while the headmaster sat peacefully behind a shield of his own creation. With each new attack and counterattack, something became glaringly obvious. Harry was better. His technique was honed by hundreds of tilts against Dumbledore, and his raw power could only be matched by the likes of Voldemort. As good as he was, Snape couldn’t truly match him. Every time he tried to put together a functional attack, he found it thwarted, much to his growing ire.
Their battle very nearly came to an end as Harry unleashed a relentless chain. Bombarda. Confringo. Petriflicus Totalus. With each new spell, Snape was pushed closer and closer to the forgotten puddle that remained on the floor from their initial salvo. Fulminis. The bolt of electricity crackled across the room, threatening to end things in a rather painful manner.
Instead, Snape managed to banish the puddle, leaving the lightning to fizzle against stone. He could see the moment that the professor finally snapped. His frustration broke through any sense of caution. The next spell that left his wand was an ugly purple, the Entrail-Expelling Curse.
Harry half-expected Dumbledore to intervene, but it didn’t appear to be forthcoming. His hint of hesitation was enough for Snape to finally land a spell. One that, thankfully, wasn’t nearly as dangerous as the previous one. In fact, Harry didn’t recognize the spell at all as he felt a tug on his left leg that left him suspended in the air.
Then came a Cutting Curse, not a simple Diffindo. Yet another spell that he’d never seen before, but that he knew was meant to cause harm. He could sense the ill intent as it left Snape’s wand. Dangling there, without knowing the counter jinx, Harry made a split-second decision. He forced himself to the side, hanging parallel to the ground. The curse passed by, leaving him unscathed, before digging deep gouges into the rock of the wall behind him.
Hanging there, suspended by his own magic and Snape’s spell. Harry held nothing back. He cast three spells in rapid succession. The first, a Blinding Spell, cast not on Snape but on himself. The next, Lumos Maxima. The light that flashed from his wand burned so bright that even in his spell-induced blindness he could still feel it. His gambit succeeded as he heard the professor cry out. The third was the counterspell to the first.
As his vision returned to him, he found Snape clutching at his own eyes, trying to master his own pain and bring his wand up to correct the damage. Pointing his wand a final time, it flashed red and Snape was thrown back, spinning in the air to land face down unconscious. With his arms spread he looked more batlike than ever.
It was only then that the headmaster dropped the shield around him and approached, “Brace yourself, Harry. The drop will be rather sudden.” As the jinx was countered, Harry levitated himself down so that he had time to turn his body. Once he was back firmly on his feet, Dumbledore appraised him, “An impressive display. You were in control of the duel throughout.”
“Until I wasn’t.” He shook his head at his own foolishness.
Albus couldn’t hide his small, amused smile, “Very true. You hesitated. A dangerous thing, especially against someone like Severus.”
“I expected you to intervene.” Harry told him honestly, “It was foolish.”
“Rest assured, I was prepared to intervene if I thought it truly necessary. But I wanted to see how you would respond when put under genuine threat from a skilled opponent. Sufficed to say you devised a brilliant strategy and reacted remarkably.” He chuckled, “I myself am still seeing stars, my boy.”
“With that twinkle in your eye, I always thought that was just a consistent state of being for you, professor.” Harry deadpanned. He always suspected the twinkle was either deliberate or a manifestation of his magic, not dissimilar to the glow that could occur in the eyes of truly powerful magicals.
The headmaster blinked owlishly at him for a moment before laughing low in his belly, “Very good…” He took a few seconds to collect himself before turning his attention to his fallen colleague, “Now, I really ought to help, Severus.”
He didn’t need his wand to cast a silent reenervate. The mass of black fabric stirred instantly, hurrying to his feet. His usually sallow skin was a splotchy red in his rage. His greasy hair, unkept around his head. At the best of times, Severus Snape despised losing but losing to a Potter was something else entirely.
As he brandished his wand, he corrected the damage done by Harry’s spell, before his attention became fixed solely on Harry, an undoubtedly debilitating curse on his mind, Dumbledore spoke, “Severus, enough.” His name reverberated around the room as though magically enhanced and shook the professor from his fervor.
His black eyes flicked from Harry to the headmaster before he schooled himself. Slicking back his hair, there was a tremor of contained fury in each word, “Albus, now that I have the measure of Potter, I believe that we should go again.” Harry resisted the urge not to scoff at the insinuation.
Dumbledore made to speak, but Harry cut in before he had the chance, “I think that’s a brilliant idea, professor.” He smirked as the potions master glared daggers at him.
Looking between them, the headmaster sighed, “Very well.” He made no effort to reiterate his earlier warning, no doubt thinking it was a lost cause. Though that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. And much as I can’t stand him, he’s not useful if he’s fighting me with restrictions.
As Dumbledore returned to his previous post at the side of the room, Snape brought his wand up again. The spell was neon pink… and hit feebly against a shield that erupted between them. As did the next… and the next after that…

I should’ve known that, once he realized he was outmatched, he would go to great lengths to even the odds. He loses any good sense where you’re involved.”
“That’s something of an understatement.” The man was downright bipolar where Harry was concerned, protecting him on the occasions where it was necessary for Lily’s sake, but otherwise hating him because of James. What an awful way to live.
Dumbledore nodded, “For what it’s worth, your response was nothing short of brilliant. Fiendfyre, especially cast by someone like Severus, is difficult to counter and you managed it on instinct, and no small amount of power.” He finished with a commiserating wink.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I really should get Professor Snape down to see Poppy. With luck, he’ll have his leg restored to him. It appeared to me that you reconstituted the curse before redirecting it. While he’ll never thank you for it, know that I appreciate it.” With that, he spun on his heels and headed for the door, casually lifting the unconscious potion’s master as he passed.
At the exit, rather than the usual door appearing a smaller one materialized. Opening it, Dumbledore chuckled, muttering to himself, “This room is truly spectacular.” Harry was able to peak around him enough to see that it’d opened a doorway just outside of the infirmary before the headmaster stepped through and left him alone.
For the first time since the fighting began, Harry took stock of the room. There were loose stones scattered about, scorch marks littered on the walls behind where he’d been standing, and a deep, smoldering hole where his final spell impacted. It spoke volumes about the room that all it took was a simple thought to return it to its previous state. Repair the damage.
