As I'm sure you have noticed we have been releasing more and more animated map at the moment. 🎥🗺️ Going forward we’ll be releasing one animated map per week, and we want to make sure they strike the right balance: bringing the world to life without distracting your players.
Today we’ve put together a Forest Campsite 30x30, complete with flickering campfires, swaying trees, and just the right amount of atmosphere. This is just one of ten animated maps that we’ll be releasing to for free soon as part of a brand new taster pack! But for now, you can grab this one as a free download—consider it a sneak peek.

Absolutely! I did start releasing some animated assets recently but its still very much in the beta stage. Watch this space though!

I also like it if the animated assets on the map can be released separately. It would be nice to be able to use that fireplace, the tents and even trees on static maps to bring them alive.

I like the level of animation in this one. I personally don't need sounds, weather or even really birds (foundry does all these easily) but the flags, trees and bits foundry doesn't do are all good.

So first of all, I really love the style of those maps. Nothing distracts too much. What works? The subtle animation are great and that there's nothing that loops "too much". A bird that flys through every 20 seconds can become problematic and distracting after a few minutes. What feels too much? The rain is too much for me. If I had to, I would choose one of the other maps and describe that it's raining, or use foundrys build in rain option (not top down, but also not so distracting). If rain, than something a lot more subtle. Even if the mist is great, the loop is to fast (from light fog to dense fog to light fog), especially in the lower part of the map. I prefer animated maps, especially for outdoor, natural terrain. So Forest, caves, water, lava etc are fine. Dungeons, castles, etc. already usually come with much detail so I drop some lighting and everything is fine. But that's only my taste.
