Longer-than-expected ramble incoming. There's something I find sorta innately romantic about Ysabella's and Romanus' dynamic despite both her and Alain's encounters in Book 1 coming to harmless, overall casual flirtation, but the full picture from these side stories paint an adorable and kind of heartbreaking picture. You make it so tough to pick between her and Alessa, more than a year and a half after picking up The Golden Rose for the first time! I feel like Alessa and my MC as I've built him have very similar personalities and flaws, with very different ways of seeing the world and the people around them. The beauty is in seeing them step out of the walls they've built up to support each other, to put themselves out there with one small, quiet act of kindness at a time. I think with both Hadrian and Alessa most people buy into their romances/friendships not just because of the time spent with them, though that is a factor, but because of the many, many tiny moments we have with them where we're shown their very first impulse upon seeing Romanus exhausted, injured, shaken or annoyed is to check up on them and offer some small assistance, and the many opportunities we get to reciprocate. We believe these characters care. Meanwhile Romanus, for Ysabella, is basically someone who stepped out of a storybook and I adore that. A mysterious, dashing stranger from far off carrying a weapon. Capable, gentle, and 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦, which more than anything else is what she wants. All her side stories have Ysabella totally enthralled with Romanus taking care of her, of Romanus seeing Bella before a noble lady of house Theer. Simple affection with no machinations behind it. And if Romanus could 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 her that freedom? Carry her over the horizon on a lazy-eyed horse to greener pastures? It's a dream come true! Well, good thing there are extra slots for saves. Anyone who only does one playthrough is missing a truckload of content!

Man, I can't with Alain. Every time he pops up in these, he has a moment that makes me fully laugh out loud. The amount of joy he takes in making poor Hadrian uncomfortable is hilarious! I also love the choice to keep Ysabella vigilant in maintaining her "virginity" that's a whole new level of dynamic when it comes to intimacy that, as far as I've seen, no other RO has.
