Chapter 19: King Gwyn's Schemes
🕑 Added 2025-04-13 11:55:46 +0000 UTCAlthough he had a lot to say, Menachel was still regarded as a hero by the rebels for his brave record of fighting two people alone.
Many residential houses in the city of Carleon have been occupied and used as temporary bases. Fortunately, the eight kings restrained their subordinates in time and no one was hurt.
When King Gwyn found Menachel, Menachel was thinking about how to get out of this sea of suffering. The most effective way was undoubtedly to behead all the rebel kings as a letter of surrender.
But corresponding problems also arose. In terms of single-handed fighting, Menachel could overwhelm everyone here– even the King of the Hundred Knights, who was praised for his bravery, was definitely not Menachel’s opponent. But no matter how confident he was in his own strength, Menachel would never be sure to survive the siege of thousands of knights.
But the kind-hearted King Gwyn did not have such worries. King Gwyn, with a red face, obviously drank a lot of wine.
Perhaps it was because Menachel had achieved the feat of fighting two knights alone “to save him” today that King Gwyn let down his guard and made this king, who usually had little sense of existence, gain a lot of face. King Gwyn, who was in high spirits, pulled Menachel to talk.
“Sir Menachel, why are you still wearing such an inconvenient head armor at such a grand banquet?”
Hearing King Gwyn’s joking tone, Menachel had to silently take off the head armor and put it between his knees. He stared at his head armor. The head armor carefully carved by the elves showed a hideous face, like a roaring evil spirit.
So ugly.
This was Menachel’s first thought.
Finally, Menachel raised his head under King Gwyn’s silent and burning gaze.
“You are indeed a promising young man.” King Gwyn laughed with satisfaction. Hearing the other’s hearty laughter, Menachel, who was worried about his situation, suddenly felt a little annoyed. He was just about to find a reason to leave when King Gwyn suddenly changed the subject.
“Tomorrow, the King of the Hundred Knights will lead the coalition forces to attack the rear city.” King Gwyn covered his mouth and nose with his hands to hide his burp, and then his eyes were unfocused, and he suddenly laughed and continued: “Except for the King of the Hundred Knights, other kings don’t have to go this time. So Sir Menachel, stay with me at the rear this time.”
In other words, there is only one, the King of the Hundred Knights in the frontline. Menachel’s eyes flickered. Isn’t this the good opportunity he is looking for?
So Menachel immediately volunteered, “Lord Chamo has just attacked the city today and needs a rest. Let me go with the King of the Hundred Knights tomorrow… to attack.”
Menachel had looked at King Gwyn’s army on the boring march. Except for himself and Chamo, the rest of the knights were all wearing standard blue cavalry light armor, which just showed that the King of the Hundred Knights had no one left.
“But” King Gwyn’s tone was a little loose, but he still refused to give in.
“I have just arrived and have no merits. I need to make merits to repay… repay the king’s kindness to me.”
Menachel felt like he was talking nonsense in a dream, but for the sake of the overall situation, he had to say so.
“Okay then.”
Finally, King Gwyn reluctantly agreed to Menachel’s statement. King Gwyn immediately issued the most formal decree, appointing Menachel to replace Chamo.
The unexpected surprise immediately diluted Menachel’s sorrow. At this time, he felt that King Gwyn was pleasing to the eye, and felt that this old guy was both kind and enthusiastic.
King Gwyn seemed to have come here only to explain this matter. After he finished talking about this matter, he just exchanged a few pleasantries and hurriedly left the table. He did not even return to the banquet, leaving Menachel alone in ecstasy.
After pretending to be unwell, King Gwyn returned to the tent with only Chamour.
“My King, isn’t this a bit inappropriate?” Chamour, who had been following King Gwyn, finally couldn’t stand it anymore and suddenly said, “Although Sir Menachel is a loyal and powerful knight, after all, isn’t it a bit too hasty to give him the command of the army when he just arrived?”
“Loyalty is loyalty, but the loyalty may not be directed at me.” King Gwyn smiled and whispered, “He came to me at such a clever time. I never thought that someone would gamble his life on a possible opportunity, but Sir Menachel is an exception.”
“Ah?”
Although Chamour understood every word of King Gwyn, he could only throw out an interjection to express his confusion when they were connected.
“He appeared for no reason, as if he was a man sent from heaven.” King Gwyn glanced at Chamo with a hint of meaning: “Lord Chamo, don’t you think this life experience is very similar to someone’s?”
The someone in King Gwyn’s words was King Arthur.
After hearing this, Chamo’s back was immediately soaked with cold sweat. He knew that King Gwyn was hinting at him.
“Today I stood behind him. Although Lord Menachel has been wearing heavy armor, I can be sure that he obviously froze for a while when he saw King Arthur’s true face, and even deliberately let King Arthur go when fighting him.”
In fact, King Gwyn didn’t see anything at all, but Merlin’s overly eye-catching behavior on the high platform made it difficult for King Gwyn not to see it – he smiled at Menachel from time to time.
“And King Arthur’s behavior is too strange. He actually allowed us to enter the city without any precautions. It’s like – deliberately selling us a flaw.”
King Gwyn was actually not sure about this. He just reversed this point based on the premise of “Menachel’s guilt”.
“But I’m completely sure of it just now.”
King Gwyn continued to maintain a wise smile.
“Then why did you give… such an important position to that guy Menachel?” Chamo paused: “Do you want to use the hand of the King of the Hundred Knights…”
“Almost.”
King Gwyn finally showed a proud smile.
However, he did not want to use the hand of the King of the Hundred Knights to eliminate the hidden dangers around him as Chamo guessed. On the contrary, he wanted to use King Arthur to weaken the strength of the King of the Hundred Knights.
Although everyone has formed an alliance driven by the same interests, as long as King Arthur dies, this huge alliance will immediately disappear. At that time, King Gwyn, who is the weakest among the few, will probably be the target of attack by the other kings.
King Gwyn is not worried that Menachel can get away unscathed, because in addition to him, the King of the Hundred Knights and other kings probably have the same idea. Therefore, Menachel, who performed very well today, may die from a stray arrow tomorrow.
As for the knights who originally belonged to King Gwyn, let them die – after all, they were just some ordinary soldiers who were temporarily hired to pretend to be knights.
“But, King,”
Chamo hesitated, as if he wanted to say something but was embarrassed to speak.
King Gwyn nodded, and at the same time looked at the bright moon in the sky, motioning him to continue.
“Will other kings also doubt Menethil…”
“No.” King Gwyn smiled slightly: “Because, he was recommended by me.”
Moreover, even if they had doubts, it would not have any effect on King Gwyn.
Everything was planned out.
King Gwyn commented like this, and stretched out his hand to the bright moon in the sky.
