The Gift of Passion
Izuku never thought heâd get to live his dream. After losing One For All, it took him some time to find his footing again. Being cut off from something that brought him such joy had been difficult to accept. If not for the never-ending support of his friends and family, Izuku might not have been able to look back at the time so fondly. By the time All Might presented the suit Katsuki and the other made for him, Izuku had mourned his loss, and started a teaching career he enjoyed.
Now, two years after having his dream returned to him, Izuku couldnât imagine his life any other way. He got to work as a teacher who helped the heroes of the future, while also jumping through the city and fighting villains. But maybe the biggest wish was one heâd only thought of when blowing out candles or seeing shooting stars. The deep desire to reach out for Katsukiâs hand, and have his favorite person link their fingers with a smile just for him.
Of course, a month after getting the new suit, Katsuki did what he always did; blasted all of Izukuâs expectations out of the water. All it took was one hand over his hip, a gentle call of his name, and hot lips against his to show Izuku just how perfect life could be. That kiss was the first of thousands over the next two years, each one making Izukuâs heart swell and his mouth tingle. Their relationship had its swerves and bumps, but it was theirs. And Izuku knew his happiness was safe in Katsukiâs strong hands.
So when Kota stepped in front of his desk after school, sharp eyes and little frown a reminder of his boyfriend, Izuku didnât expect the gruff question. âWhat is the substitute gonna make us do tomorrow?â
âEh?â Izuku blinked, unsure why the student thought heâd be out of class the following day. He wasnât feeling under the weather, and there was no request for his assistance patrolling. Trying to figure out where the train of thought came from, Izuku offered Kota a sheepish smile. âWhere am I supposed to be going tomorrow?â
âHow would I know? Iâm not Dynamight.â Kotaâs comment only confused him more. Something on his face must have given him away, because the third year huffed and crossed his arms. âDonât married people do special things for their birthday?â
âMarried? Birthâoh!â Izuku turned his wristwatch, checking the date before he let out a sheepish laugh. âI didnât realize it was tomorrow.â
âHowâd you forget your own birthday?!â
âAh, well, when youâre older, you have a lot of responsibilities. Some things get lost in the shuffle.â Izuku looked up, shrugging at Kotaâs disbelieving nose scrunch. âBesides, I have to teach and Kacchanâs in charge of an agency. We canât take the entire day off without a valid reason.â
âIf he was a good partner, heâd be the one asking you this, not me,â Kota grumbled, Izuku smiling at his studentâs pout. âIf he canât even make your birthday special, whatâs the point of being together?â
âBecause we love each other,â Izuku answered, still feeling a hint of heat in his cheeks despite the two exchanging the words a year ago. âBut as adults, itâs not that simple. Kacchan is a hero; the world wonât stop needing him just because itâs my birthday.â
But Kota wasnât sold. âDynamightâs world should. Heâs supposed to celebrate the special moments with you. And your birthdays should be the most important, cause itâs the day fate gave him the best gift of his life.â
âKota.â He laughed at the black-and-white thinking, finding more similarities with the angry teenager his boyfriend used to be. âYouâve got a very romantic heart. I think whoever gets your love will be very lucky. Which reminds me⊠are you going to Eriâs performance next week?â
âWh-why wouldnât I? Sheâs my friend. Just my friend.â The abrupt change of Kotaâs cheeks from pale to flushed happened faster than Izuku could blink, meaning he missed his student slamming something down on his desk before spinning around. âWhatever, Iâm going home.â
âBe safe!â Izuku called out cheerfully, waiting until his embarrassed student left the room to look down at what he left behind. âOh. How cute.â
The simple gift shouldnât have made his heart soften so much, but Izuku was always a sentimental person. Seeing All Might, Katsuki, and himself in sticker form made him smile while he packed his things and started on his walk home. The little poses and detail to their suits proved whoever made them were fans, despite Izukuâs decreased shifts and All Mightâs retirement. To see himself by his two favorite heroes made the child inside of him cheer, safely tucking the sticker book in his pocket before a giggle caught his attention.
There, on the opposite side of the street, was a couple sitting on a park bench. They must have been teenagers, the girl sitting on the guyâs lap with her arms wrapped around his neck. The way they looked at each other, like there was nobody else in their world, screamed of the passionate fire of a new romance. Even his gentle hold on her hip, keeping her steady on his lap as they spoke, twitched like it wasnât something he was used to.
Kacchan used to get that twitch when we held hands, Izuku thought, his smile soft while he turned away and continued on his path home.
When he and Katsuki finally confessed, the outburst of their overflowing passion had burned Izukuâs cheeks in embarrassment. Despite his shame, anytime Katsuki grabbed him close and dragged him to slide their lips together, he never refused. He couldnât pretend heâd never done the same, needing to taste the sweet mouth of the man he still struggled to accept was his. They got in trouble several times for their moments of intimacy when caught. Izukuâs classroom, alleyways during patrol, or even times when they went out with their friends were not off limits. But after dating for two years, moving in together about two months before Izukuâs birthday, things were settled between them. The sex was still great, and Izuku loved the gentle eye-rolls and hips squeezes when Katsuki slipped behind Izuku in the bathroom to get something. He loved Katsuki even more now that heâd seen him half-asleep and flipping pancakes in just sweatpants and fuzzy morning hair. There was nothing more soothing than Katsuki rubbing his back when Izuku had caught the flu, exchanging forehead kisses and cuddles for feeding him medicine and making homemade soup. Izuku looked forward to coming home and flopping onto the couch, watching the news while Katsuki stroked his hair. Their love wasnât the raging fire that burned down buildings. Over the years, it had sunk into something warm. Comfortable. Genuine.
Still, thinking over Kotaâs words, he had to wonder; did the lack of heat mean theyâd grown⊠complacent?

His eyes moved from the spam mail, swiping it away to look at his background. It was from a hike with Katsuki and All Might, a hobby they tried to do every few months. In the picture taken by their mentor, Izuku had kissed Katsukiâs cheek over his scar, causing his boyfriend to grin without caring how âstupidâ he looked. Itâd been eight months since theyâd taken the picture, and life had made it impossible for them to go back since.
âHave we gotten too busy for each other?â Izuku asked the screen, a bubble of discomfort filling his stomach. âHas⊠has Kacchan gotten bored?â
As soon as the question left his lips, Izuku shook his head. If Katsukiâs feelings had changed, he wouldnât have stayed with Izuku. At the very least, their communication skills had gotten strong enough to talk about serious things without assuming everything was broken or ruined between them. Katsuki loved him, told him every day without fail. And even if Katsuki still had habits that needed some care, telling the truth wasnât one of them. They wanted to chase each other forever, and even if their sprint had trickled into a simple stroll, Izuku didnât mind.
Heâd follow Katsuki anywhere. A missed birthday didnât change that.
The moment of insecurity was completely forgotten when Izuku woke up to warm kisses pressed to his cheek and forehead the next morning. Humming in the strong embrace of his boyfriend, Izuku pretended to be asleep for a couple of seconds (despite both knowing he was awake) to enjoy the pampering. Finally, when one kiss and hot breath ticked the sensitive skin of his earlobe, Izuku pulled away, opened his heavy lashes to look up at the man leaning over him. Sunshine poured into their bedroom window, giving Katsuki a beautiful glow. His red eyes glimmered while staring down at him, Izuku breathless from how gorgeous his boyfriend was.
âGood morning,â he whispered, Katsuki humming before finally placing a kiss over Izukuâs waiting mouth. Melting into the soft affection, he waited until Katsuki pulled away to ask his question. âWhy am I getting such a nice wake up?â
âCause itâs against the law to abuse the elderly, and youâre an old man now,â Katsuki said, grinning while he bumped their foreheads. âHappy birthday, Nerd.â
âThank you.â Nuzzling their noses together, Izuku smiled. âAlso, youâre three months older than me. So if Iâm old, you must beâAh! Kacchan, please!â
Despite Katsuki trying to smother him under their pillow, Izuku burst out into laughter, playful in his hits against the man who felt like he was made of steel. The âfightâ barely lasted a minute before the pillow was tossed to the side, forgotten when Katsukiâs hands found his hips instead. The time slipped by quickly, only getting to share a few deep kisses before the sound of Katsukiâs phone going off broke them apart. They rushed to get ready for work, exchanging another sweet kiss at the door before Katsuki shot off to save the city. Izuku watched him for a moment, still as love-struck as heâd been when they were teenagers.
Izuku tightened his tie and headed toward UA. If all he got for his birthday was Katsukiâs morning kisses, then he was truly a lucky man. Being Katsukiâs boyfriend was enough.
But he should have known Katsuki never aimed for âenoughâ. Especially when it came to Izuku.

The day, for the most part, was pretty normal. His class had come together to make cupcakes without him knowing about the surprise. Catching a glimpse of Aizawa leaning in the doorway while they sang to Izuku helped him figure out who assisted his students in putting together the sweet gift. He only let his birthday distract for a few minutes before clapping his hands, shooing the students with their cupcakes back to their seats to continue with class. Other than the occasional mentions of his birthdays from fellow teachers, and the flurry of texts from friends and family, Izuku treated the day like every other one he stepped into UA.
When the bell rang to end the day, he waved out all his students before heading back to his class to finish up his paperwork. There was no reason to rush home; Katsuki always had a meeting after his shifts on Tuesdays, which meant heâd be coming home to an empty house. Not that he minded, since it was the one day Katsuki let him take on the task of dinner. Even if his boyfriend was better in the kitchen, Izuku liked to carry his weight in the relationship. While he finished grading papers about historical quirk breakthroughs, his mind went through the different meal options to make.
Except, when he made it back home, he blinked in surprise at the light shining from their kitchen window. One that he knew hadnât been on when they left.
âHello?â Izuku called out when moving through the entrance of their home, slipping his shoes off beside the boots. If that didnât give away Katsukiâs early arrival, the delicious smell coming from the kitchen would. Curious, Izuku crept down the hallway, eyes growing wide at what greeted him. âOh, KacchanâŠâ
The table was set up for two, one of his scented candles sitting between the plates. Katsuki, dressed in his casual clothes, stood in front of the stove, finishing laying out the cooked food onto the serving plate. Too stunned to speak, Izuku moved around the table to slip behind Katsuki, pushing onto his toes to hook his chin over the otherâs shoulder. Wrapping his arms around Katsukiâs torso, he gave a squeeze in greeting while pressing a welcoming kiss against the exposed neck. The damp nape and sweet smelling skin proved Katsuki had already taken a shower, meaning heâd been home long before his normal shift ended.
âWhat is all this?â He asked, catching the dry look Katsuki gave him before returning his focus back to finishing his cooking.
âWhatâs it look like? Obviously, your birthday dinner.â
âYou didnât have to do anything special for me,â Izuku whispered, despite his lips curving into a smile at the kind gesture. âIt was my night to cook for you.â
âYou snooze, you lose. Next time, donât be a nerd and come home after work.â Katsuki smirked at his own tease, freeing up a hand to reach back and pinch Izukuâs scarred cheek. âAnd when do I ever do something I donât want to? Any guy worth half their weight can make a simple dinner for their boyfriend. Donât act like this is a special present or something, Freckles.â
Izuku felt himself flush under the gentle squeeze of his cheek, though he didnât know why. It wasnât like Katsuki had whipped out a five-course meal or something too intricate. Really, katsudon was probably one of the easier recipes Katsuki had in his mental cookbook. But something about him making Izukuâs favorite dinner, specifically for his birthday, felt special. He did it without asking, just knowing Izuku and his preferences. Katsukiâs desire to surprise him, even after years of being together⊠it felt intimate.
âAlright, Nerd. Dinnerâs done; its time to detach.â
At Katsukiâs order, Izuku sighed, nuzzling into the soft skin once more before he stepped back. The instant reward came when Katsuki spun around, fingers weaving themselves into Izukuâs curls before tugging his head back. âCome sit down.â One tug while walking backwards urged Izuku to silently follow, caught in the allure of Katsukiâs teasing tone. The flare of heat in his stomach felt juvenile, but he always lost his cool when his boyfriendâs attention honed in on him. From childhood to now, being the center of Katsukiâs world, even for a moment, made Izukuâs heart flutter. Like a well-trained dog, Izuku followed the tugging on his make-shift leash, sitting when Katsuki pulled out the chair and nodded at it. The unwavering obedience earned him another kiss before Katsuki moved back to serve the dinner.
Izuku didnât know what he loved more; the perfectly cooked katsudon, or the pleasant conversation they shared between bites. With ankles hooked under the table, the two spend the meal exchanging light conversation about their day. Izuku loved hearing about Katsukiâs small fight with a low-level villain, and him scolding a group of kids for throwing a classmatesâs shoes into a tree. He shared what the students did for his birthday, catching Katsukiâs smirk when mentioning Aizawaâs probable involvement. The dinner wasnât lavish, the set up of their table nothing over the top. But it felt comfortable, like a well-worn sweatshirt from years of use. He wouldnât have traded the quiet evening for any over-the-top reservation in some fine-dining restaurant.
âIâve got the dishes,â Izuku said after the meal was done, rushing the second part of his sentence out before Katsuki could protest. âThatâs the deal we have, Kacchan. One makes dinner, and the other cleans up afterward. No exceptions was your rule.â
âDonât use my words against me like Iâm a brat.â But Izuku didnât mind the scolding when Katsuki pushed away from the table, walking toward their bedroom while waving over his shoulder. âWhatever, knock yourself out. Come find me when youâre done.â
Izuku watched the powerful frame until it disappeared out of sight, sighing over his fortune before moving the empty dishes toward the sink. A quick look at the dishwasher proved Katsuki had already done some of the work before Izuku got home, Izuku opening the door to let the lingering steam escape. He made quick work of rinsing the extra food off before he set them aside, beginning to work on putting away the dried dishes.
But when Izuku opened the cabinet for the breading bowl, he paused. There, with a pretty green and orange bow, was a wrapped present. The square gift sat exactly where Katsuki kept the mixing bowl, which meant it hadnât been there long. Obviously his boyfriend left it there, though by accident or with purpose was a mystery.
âKacchan?â He called toward the hall, though his eyes didnât leave the curious surprise. âDid you⊠thereâs something wrapped in the cabinet.â
When he didnât get an answer, Izuku slowly placed the clean bowl on the counter, reaching up to take the gift off the shelf. The perfect wrap job was the first thing that caught Izukuâs attention, drifting out of the kitchen to sit on the couch in the living room. He hesitated to tear apart something so pretty, but seeing his name on the tag stuck to the presentâs corner proved it was his to open. The temptation to take a picture of it was strong, but heâd left his phone in the kitchen, and he was too curious to wait any longer. Sliding his hand under the fold on the back of the present, he ripped the wrapping away, unsure what he was seeing. Because it looked⊠exactly like his hero notebooks from his childhood.
Except it wasnât his handwriting scribbled over the cover.
âCreation of Hero Dekuâs SuitâŠâ The schematic drawn on the front of the journal looked similar to his current suit, though he knew the rogue draft wasnât the final form. Stunned, he took a second to stare, slow to slide his finger under the cover and flip it open.
There, under the simple title of âDay Oneâ, Katsukiâs writing filled the page. Izuku took his time reading the words, which felt more like a diary entry than anything scientific. He knew the date written on top of the page well; itâd been when he used the last of One For Allâs embers. And while Katsuki had written steps in the columns regarding reaching out to Mei and Melissa, as well as his current bank account balance and income, it was the frantic promise at the bottom of the page that made Izukuâs breath catch.
Dekuâs accepted he wonât be a hero like the rest of us, but I refuse to be number one until heâs fighting me for the spot. Itâs not worth it if he isnât by my side.
âOh, Kacchan.â Struggling to keep himself from crying, Izuku flipped to the next page, soaking in the next wall of information.
He wasnât sure how long he sat there, taking in the journal entries from the years between losing One For All and getting the suit. There were pictures, drafts, and different experiments for the suit that got scraped for one reason or another. Katsukiâs emotions covered the page; his joy when the energy whips held his body weight. The despair of a certain material failing Meiâs safety check. Anger over losing ranking on the hero chart, not because of his pride, but because of the money it took from the project. His heart ached for the smaller pages, where Katsuki started to realize his need to see Izuku smile wasnât just because they were friends. How he became so insecure toward the end, when Izuku stopped speaking about being a hero in favor of his teaching career.
By the time he made it to the final page, Izuku knew stopping the tears pouring down his face would be pointless.
I never planned for anyone to see this, Katsuki wrote, the date from the day before smudged at the top. Donât know how I didnât burn this shit the second I gave you the suit. And since youâre probably blubbering like a baby right now, let me tell you this; I donât regret a single thing. Not the hard days. The money I poured in. How many times I had to be Meiâs experimental doll to get her on the mission. Everything I did to get you back in the skies with me, every bloody fist and pathetic breakdown I had, was worth seeing you truly happy.
All my life, Iâve wanted to be the best hero. To be someoneâs All Might, and keep the people safe with my awesome quirk. And Iâm right there, at the top of the damn rankings, doing exactly that. Being everything I swore I would at four years old. But, you wanna know something? That means nothing when comparing it to where I am right now, writing this. Under the roof we bought, in the bed we share, with you snoring like a foghorn next to me. Youâre worth⊠so much more than anything I could have imagined. Calling you mine is my greatest accomplishment yet.

âKacchan, youââ Except his plan to shower Katsuki in his verbal affection dropped out of his head at his first glimpse of his oddly quiet boyfriend. He should have known something was off when the man hadnât come out to gloat over Izuku blubbering from his top tier gift, as he always bragged about being the best present giver.
But when seeing Katsuki, laid out without clothes, on their bed, all of it made perfect sense.
