Bonus 53: Language under the influence
🕑 Added 2021-07-01 23:27:13 +0000 UTCIn fiction, we can often tell when a character is drunk or high by their way of speaking: when someone's slurring sounds together or jumping erratically from topic to topic, the audience is meant to assume that they're under the influence. But how accurate are these fictional portrayals?
In this episode, Lauren and Gretchen get enthusiastic about two fun studies of how people talk differently when under the influence of alcohol or cannabis: the German Alcohol Language Corpus and the delightfully named "Dude, What Was I Talking About? A New Sociolinguistic Framework for Marijuana-Intoxicated Speech". We also talk about the logistical complications of setting out to study intoxicated speech, from setting up fake pubs and recording in a "vehicular environment" to the ethical issues around how to make sure that impaired people are giving informed consent to participate (tip: ask them when they're still sober).

This episode was so great! I’m going to re listen!
Lingthusiasm
I uh might have filed a bug with google assistant for not recognizing me saying "lingthusiasm" so you're not alone on that one haha (hard to believe but audio interfaces weren't a thing when we started the show or we might have picked an easier to articulate name!) But more seriously, we appreciate you stopping by to comment on this, it's something we thought a lot about in the planning of this episode 💕
I really enjoyed this episode and your sensitivity that articulation was not necessarily a good proxy for sobriety. I am a Patron in large part because I have Cerebral Palsy and not get my devices to understand my pronunciation of word "Lingthusiam" so was having a lot of trouble accessing podcast on my own. This is not to say that you are not eminently worth supporting, going down a language rabbit hole kept me sane this past year, but it is what tipped the scale to actually make a contribution! Thanks 😊
