The reason the question about the morticians feels faker than normal to me is that there’s a viral post that goes around once in a while to the effect of “mortuaries prefer to hire women and… yep, that’s why.” I tried to look into this once, and it seems like mortuary sciences is actually one of those fields that until recently was very male-dominated and is now starting to be more gender-balanced. Gender discrimination in hiring (whatever the direction) is legal in the US (because the ERA was never ratified), but if you openly had a gender preference in hiring you’d still potentially be sued and need to demonstrate in court that there’s a good reason to not hire men as morticians, which seems like it would be difficult to do. The post seems entirely untrue, but nevertheless I see it reposted periodically with total earnestness.
