I did feel you were intentionally not aiming for a main quest so as to allow a sense of openness. There is a QUEST per se, but it's one that's given very early and lightly and largely is only as important as the player themselves believes it to be. So I honestly like your rationalisation of this a lot.

A story ending when a player doesn't want to continue a thread of the plot isn't a problem so much as it is the expedient solution. Deciding to incorporate the rejection into the plot is just making more work for yourself. Sure, it can be a better game if you do include that but I would look at it as a "nice to have" and not mandatory.
