Sean Shivers

Friends are never out of line for telling the truth. They're friends when they're alone.

ReadingObsessed

He's out of line but he's right.

Michael Head

He's taking over half a continent where they're used to being in power. Appeasing them by putting their noble houses in a senate, and balancing them with sects, is the only way to attain peace.

Rocinante

And every now and then someone remembers Sen is still a kid. What happened to Dashi?

Angela Roberts

Except Sen doesn't want cultivators in mortal politics.

Michael Head

This is my two pennies. He'll need to set up a new type of government. Cultivators/sects are basically like the senate. Mortals/regional powers are like a house of representatives. A panel of wandering core cultivators, or maybe sentient oxen, as a supreme court. And a president/prime minister elected by the people very frequently, to cut down on the chances of corruption. Anything else would fall apart in a few years.

Phallusar

That's part of being selfish is not caring about what happens afterwards or not caring about what happens afterwards. Which is fair. It's like asking a person to get involved in the details of their estate for 10s of years after their death. They have to deal with it themselves eventually. And if they get it wrong then they can choose differently after the next downfall of civilization.

CentaureHeart

Just need to install a democracy. That will work well.

Kevin Boyer

Bud, if Sen truly wants to walk away from it all, good luck stopping him. His patience with mortals, especially those in power is at an all-time low.

BelligerentGnu

The thing Jing doesn't know is that it doesn't matter. Even if Sen planned to stay- especially if Sen planned to stay - the heavens wouldn't allow it. The best he can do is hand off the empire at the earliest possible moment.

Codered999

Thing is, there is actually a way to walk away, but it would basically demand he kill a lot of people that he can't politically get away with killing right now and require Sen to be willing to basically babysit the redistribution of power across the continent in a way that doesn't immediately send people into war. It'd let him walk eventually, but it would probably be the work of months if not a few years, but he would be able to delegate and spend time with family while doing it unlike the situation as it stands.

Bunny Waffles

Jing is absolutely right, though it might be prudent for Sen to bring up the fact that even if he wanted to stay, the Heavens are gonna make him ascend sooner rather than later, the pushy bastards that they are.

Angela Roberts

Hadn't thought of that but yes, Jing is right. Sen needs an actual plan for afterwards. Eesh.

Trevor Mergen

Thanks!

Emily Gurnavage

Oof. Jing comin out with the real talk. Wasn't quite the direction I was expecting but it is a pleasant surprise. I figured he wanted to talk to Sen bout the winter march (which he did) and then the deal with the generals. But this was great.

GreenB

Dang it, Jing is right. The battle to claim the throne that rules the continent would be cataclysmic. I'd never even considered it, but it's obvious now that it's pointed out.
