I'm just know reading through this backlog. While I'm not hoping that sen's character growth will end, far from it, I do hope that this aspect of it will end with this chapter and by extension this conversation. That he actually absorbs this lesson and will stop griting his teeth every time someone less powerful then him shows him respect. Like falling leaf said, he has earned it. In a world fundamentally different from ours, power rules more than almost anything else. Sen's thinking is very earth-like and it's only caused him pain.

Yeah, that's some of what I was going for. If you think of emotional wellness as existing on a kind of pendulum, I thought I'd taken Sen as far as I wanted to toward the dark/angry side of the pendulum. This is him on the return trip to a lighter version of himself, although one tempered a bit by age and hard, hard experience. He'll never be the idealist he was at the end of book 1 ever again. He knows better now. But he can choose not to see every situation as an inevitable prelude to murderous violence.

I feel like this book is capturing the essence of the first ones, slowly shrugging off the bitter, desperate rage in exchange for a kind of innocence of the first books. It is tainted yes but it just feels nostalgic for some reason, I guess Sen’s time at Roulan’s helped him more than he realises.

There is one Sect Matriach that will calmly remove Xing Xing from her present life. No ascension needed.

Honestly, I like the Sua character because she’s a sect prodigy from what is clearly a large sect, and her perspective on Sen’s actions and the impossibilities he casually performs will be hilarious. Additionally, she doesn’t yet realize that her personality makes her goal of charming Sen impossible, so she’ll either get shut down hard, or will have to have an arc where she becomes a better person. Or at the very least, a less typical arrogant sect person.

I agree with this 100%. I also don’t want her to attend because I think Sen would slightly obliviously allow her to slow creep her way into things, she’d just be ‘there’, and all the insinuations and assumptions made by gossiping cultivators would blow her ego up even more

Lola

Oh, Falling Leaf. 🤣 How like a cat, a mixture of predatory wisdom and pratfalls. I don’t want Sen to talk Sua because I feel that if anyone would aggravate that princess who already has an unfair grudge against him, it would be that woman. Also, I don’t want to spend more time reading about her. Sorry, Falling Leaf!

It's a hard lesson Sen needed to learn and I think it's better he learned it this way, than if it were to happen in super violent ways.
