That's probably the root of the problem. The way he does alchemy is informed by savant-level instincts. He's following instructions, to the letter, designed for any halfway competent idiot. It's like a math genius able to power through a complicated problem in a couple of steps, with a lot of the intermediary calculations done in their head, getting tripped up when asked to show their work at each prescribed step "the right way." It messes with them because they don't need to do it like that and having to just gets in their way.

Is there any particular reason why Sen wouldn't have just tried to refine a pill the old way? This total failure to experiment seems uncharacteristic and forced. It very much goes against everything he's done so far, considering his cultivation.

Elijah Overland

Pills are probably incompatible with his cultivation on some level due to his personal experiences and biases against them. Sen’s cultivation is just really personal and eccentric like that, probably.

Eric Dontigney

That would be the thing to do in real life, but it would make for super dull reading.

Barbara Collier

Yes sir bring back the pot!

Gio

Just needs a little debugging. First Fen Ruolan should repeat the process just to make sure it really is Sen that is doing it and it's not the pot or some other environmental effect. If that works, then they should find out what/when goes wrong by having Fen Ruolan repeat the processes and have Sen take over at certain points, figure out if it always goes wrong or only when Sen does certain things.

Well she just wanted him to ask. She's a lost teacher that's frustrated she's got no one ti teach

Keven Leigh

Dude just needs to follow his instincs lol

Valderan

He needs to go back and perform this demonstration for all of his "pupils" at the Fire sect. Surface wise, it might be good for them to see him fail so he wouldn't get passles of prospective apprentices up in his business. A deeper lesson might be that the nature of alchemy has a profoundity to it that goes beyond the scientific and they should understand and respect it. I mean... assuming that it isn't something like his mixed qi is doing weird shit or some other easily explained and accounted for phenom.

I wonder how long it will take for either of them to consider having Sen treat it like he treats making elixirs. Let himself do all the things his instincts are screaming at him to do during the process. It might not work, but it seems like a sensible experiment to try out. After all, if following the instructions doesn't work, it only stands to reason that the solution lies in not following the instructions.
