The making of black & blue (!SPOILER ALERT!)
Vielen dank für eure Geduld und Unterstützung!

Hab euch lieb!
Eure MAUS!
English: Since I was in Vienna last week and it still takes a few days until the next black & blue update, I thought I'd give you a little insight into my work process in between! ^-^
I've heard a few times that you guys would be interested in this and now is the perfect time! :D
I always work in batches of 5-6 pages. Here's how it goes:
1. layouting phase:
There is a rough script for each chapter. Whenever I start a new chapter, I first write the script and use it as guideline week by week. In the first step I draw the layout sketches for the current batch (sometimes for 2-3 batches, depending on how well I feel XD). Then I throw the layout sketches into the black & blue working folder and my translator Babsi starts translating the texts into English in the following days. I always write the original texts in German.
2. page prep
I copy the rough layout sketches as a basis into my page files. The program I'm working with is called Clip Studio Paint and it has a "story feature" in which you can display a chapter clearly, page by page :D (see picture number 2!). Here you can also see at the very end how some pages are half finished and others .... even less xDDD The last pages still need some work until they can be uploaded to Patreon!).
I like to draw my final artwork over the rough layout sketches, because that way I can keep some of the spontaneity of the rough sketches. ^-^
3.: Backgrounds
The backgrounds in black & blue are completely computer generated, based on 3D models from Google Sketchup! They may look hand-painted, but the whole thing is just.... a digital image. XD It works something like this: I save the boring looking smooth 3D images out of Sketchup and throw them into a program that generates great watercolor effects!
Finally, I assemble the backgrounds in Clip Studio Paint: On the top layer go the lines of the 3D background, which I also saved separately, and below that I put the filtered watercolor image with some effects and color corrections.
This then has to be repeated for each background! Most of the time this step alone takes a whole day. Sometimes an evening is enough. XD
On picture 3 and 4 you can see how "basic" the SM hotel room looks unedited :D
4.: Insert 3D figures
To save time and also for a better result, in some panels I like to work with 3D figures as a base. That means, in the next step I use 3d characters everywhere where I need them. Each character has its own body model with the appropriate proportions, but also a head model for tricky head angles. :D I use the head models rather rarely, because I like to draw the faces freestyle and spontaneously, but MANY times it is useful! XD (see picture 5 and 6)
In this step I also add the speech bubbles, because then I know exactly where the characters will be on the page.
5.: Final artwork
You can see the beginning of the final artwork on picture 7. VuV Everything is still very much in progress XD The background, the rough sketch and the 3D figures are temporarily set to blue, so I can fully concentrate on sketching.
6. inking
Quickly explained: The final artwork is drawn with a digital ink-pen, as well as the soundwords! When this step is done, I upload the pages into the black & blue working folder and my flatting-assistants Kamidog and Horrorkissen start to fill the figures with flat base colors!
7. color finish
I download the pages edited by my assistants and add blush, textures, shadows and light to the flat colors. Also the backgrounds are reworked, the lines are slightly colored.
8: Lettering
The pages are FINALLY finished now and can be lettered. I don't do this in Clip Studio Paint, because the program still has some quirks when it comes to professionally finishing print data. So I continue in Affinity Publisher, where the texts are inserted. From there I save the pages to Dropbox, from where you could read black & blue so far (now there's the homepage for that!). <3 ---> www.webcomic.melanieschober.at )
So, this is how it is xD Now you know how much work goes into every single black & blue page! I hope you enjoyed this little insight and it will sweeten the waiting time for the next update. That should come on thursday or friday! >u<
Thanks a lot for your patience and support!
You are the best community EVER!
Love you!

This is an awesome look behind the scenes! I knew there was a lot that went into making something like a webcomic, but that's a lot more than I thought! You're freaking amazing for how quickly you get all that done! (And your assistants, too!)
