The Fifth Master: Chapter 2
🕑 Added 2025-09-22 02:33:13 +0000 UTCA/N: I wrote the first chapter of this ages ago and it was well received, but it never really flourished in the polls and it got forgotten. I don't want it to be completely forgotten, so I'm giving it a chance to progress and maybe garner more interest.
Quick Note: I'm on vacation right now, hence why updates were slow the last few days (traveling). I've done chapters in advance, but they need to be edited and revised in places, and my free time to do that is obviously in flux, so please forgive a slightly erratic week for updates. This will only last 1 week; I'll be home and everything will be back to normal next week!
Chapter 2
The Fifth Master
“Son, where did you get all of this?” Macao asked.
Harry had picked up one of the jewels from the edge of the pile, tossing and catching it. “What’s wrong? Is it a lot?”
“You could run a whole guild for years off of this,” Macao said. “It’s too much. No one would give this up easily.”
“Huh,” Harry said. “I guess that’s why Twilight Ogre looked so upset about losing it.”
“Did you steal from them?” Laki asked. “They don’t let anyone off lightly!”
“No way,” Harry said. “Their leader coughed it up as soon as I asked! I just had to knock a little bit of sense into him first…”
“You fought them, then,” Macao said. “You must be a mage. The Magic Council has laws against attacking guilds. If you fight seriously, it can get you classified as a dark mage.”
Harry frowned. The mood wasn’t what he hoped it would be. “Oops? Hopefully they don’t catch me.”
“Twilight Ogre wouldn’t have just handed this over,” Macao said. “They care about money more than anything. To take theirs would mean you had to destroy the whole guild. If Twilight Ogre has really been wiped out, there’s only one thing we can do…”
Macao, Wakaba, and Laki all stood up. Harry’s hand went a little closer to his wand. He could tell how much these people cared about their guild. They treasured Fairy Tail more than they treasured their own lives. If they thought Harry’s actions might get Fairy Tail disbanded, he wasn’t sure what they would do.

It didn’t take long for the other members to arrive. The guild building came to life. Even earlier, when everyone had been joking around, it didn’t feel like this. A shadow had been lifted, stripping a weight off of Fairy Tail’s shoulders. Harry found himself smiling the way that they were. Even though they didn’t know each other well, he could tell that these were kind people. He was happy to have helped.
There wasn’t a single second of down time. Reedus forced Harry to tell the story of the battle, painting every detail. The version Reedus painted made Harry look extra heroic. Harry tried to explain that he couldn’t actually shoot lasers from his eyes, but it was a lost cause.
Reedus had barely heard the whole story before Harry was pulled away by Jet and Droy. They wanted Harry to give them tips on how to use their own magics. Jet was fast, while Droy controlled plants, and both of them felt like they had hit walls in their growth. “We’ll have to raise the difficulty next time,” Alzack said, blowing smoke away from the barrel of his pistol. “Maybe some moving targets.”
He was already pretty drunk. The way he looked at the spectators as he said that, made them take a collective step back. His wife took him home not long after.
Finally, Harry settled at the main table. Macao had challenged him to a drinking match. Being a proper Brit, it wasn’t in Harry’s DNA to refuse. The men went beer-for-beer in front of an eager crowd. Harry was clearly the fan favorite, which made Macao rage.

“What happened?”
“Ah… We don’t know.” Macao drank again. It almost felt like he’d forgotten their match, drowning his sorrows instead. “All our best mages went to an island to test the youngsters. Something happened. A dark guild was involved along with something powerful. The whole island disappeared. None of them ever turned up. Not even… a body…”
Macao whispered at the end. He drank again— going twice before Harry got a turn in.
He flinched when Harry knocked back two drinks at once. This time, Harry really almost hurled. He belched loudly and slammed his hands on the table.
“That’s cheating. Don’t go drinking twice without me!”
Macao blinked. He laughed out loud, holding his gut. “You’re right! What am I doing letting my mind wander? We’re in the middle of a match!”
That’s what he said, but when he grabbed a beer — one of the last two that had been prepared for them — he started at his frothy reflection instead of drinking. Looking up, he met Harry’s eyes.
“You’re a good guy. What do you say to joining Fairy Tail?”
“Sure,” Harry said. “Why not?”
