A great example of this is the rat drowning experiment. Rats were left in a pool to tread water. 15 minutes in they gave up. They pulled the rats out, dried them off, and when they ran the experiment again the rats lasted 48 hours. Thinking you have a way out changes everything. To be honest, as soon as you offer the victim to opt-out, it is not comparable to actual torture at all. Torture is primarily about breaking your will and not physical harm. If you know you can stop the process at any time, you are able to endure much more. I'm sure you know as much but I wanted to point this out nonetheless.

It's insane to watch, kinda felt guily myself. I can't imagine what Hassan must have felt. There are some comments on the YT video warning against trying it out and that it is actually quite dangerous even for short amounts of time. Many many replies to these comments are echoing that the video and the "warning" comment just made them want to try it even more (can't disagree...). I think there should have been a warning or a disclaimer of how dangerous even a little bit drowning can be. I can't find anything tangible but apparently it's nothing like accidentally breathing in water at the pool and much more dangerous.

If you pushed someone under water for some time, they would actually drown. But the people doing this are very keen on you staying alive. It triggers all the reflexes, but as you can see, you can just take the cloth away for a moment, and then rinse and repeat.

If it's done correctly the water will fill your mouth and nose and the upper part of your throat but never reaches the lungs because the person being tortured is tilted head down. I don't think it's possible to breathe so they can't do it forever. I'm guessing the reasoning behind it is that the sensation of drowning causes more primal panic than just choking someone for a short period of time, even though that would obviously be horrifying as well.
