Modern surgery is basically just WW1 field operations with a thin veneer of pomp and circumstance, don't kid yourself. The image of surgery we got from medical dramas and procedurals showing surgeons delicately cutting skin with a scalpel was done for camera-friendliness and audience appeal. The major advancements are in regards to identifying the cause and location, managing pain and minimizing infections--which are more important than whether your surgeon uses a super special $5,000 surgical bone saw or a $5 home depot hacksaw that's been properly sterilized.

If plastic surgery freaks you out I highly recommend watching videos of orthopaedic surgeries. Lots of hammers, manhandling, metal rods inserted into bone marrow, etc. Works a treat if you're looking to lose your lunch! 😃

This show is free marketing for Dr. Dubrow's services. I'm pretty sure he profits a lot from having a celebrity client list but he profits more from doing reality TV showcasing his work. It's even worse because now he has a show where he fixes botched / unwanted procedures. His playing into these insecurities for this competition makes me frustrated his license wasn't stripped away. But instead, the same network rewarded him later with another "more ethical" show.

I think that’s what makes it all the more painful to see. No one’s really immune to it - it’s everywhere. Even if it’s not as extreme as surgery, the beauty industry will tell you normal things like aging, cellulite, or whatever are a problem in order to push a product (which may or may not work), while maximizing profits. And then in the extreme cases, you’ve got the cosmetic surgeon continuously pointing out “flaws” and talking about how he can “fix” them with no real stopping point. It makes me wonder if they would still push this kind of ethical boundary if there wasn’t such a profit incentive.

Not sure how I feel about this. It's messed up that these women are doing all that to feel beautiful in front of their future husbands, but as a woman with my own insecurities I kind of understand why they decided to do that. Women are being judged for how they look, and then they're also judged for getting a plastic surgery, so you really can't win (unless you're in a terrible American reality show).

This was a pain to watch. Not just because of the surgeries, but because of the whole idea that insecurities are profited off of. I mean I get that cosmetics and cosmetic procedures can help with confidence for some people. But I feel like a lot of the “problems” that people are made to feel insecure about are manufactured in order for businesses and industries can sell “solutions” to them. They profit off of people trying to achieve an ideal that is usually unattainable.
