I think the main problem with shows like how to catch a predator is less the power imbalance between the police and pedophile, and more the fact that this company is making a spectacle out of pedophilia. It's not like they actually give a shit about the kids being victimized, they don't try to give advice on how to spot dangerous people online or how to protect your kid from this sort of thing, and I highly doubt any of the prophet made from this show goes to any productive causes (the police obviously do not count). They're just propheting off of a horrible issue without making any attempts to make it better.

As a kid I always felt a little off watching this show or catfishing predator stuff in general. I enjoyed the drama of it, but generally they always made me feel weird and uncomfortable, like something wasn't right. I don't think I knew about mental illnesses as a kid, but I certainly had a morality call. As an adult today, I can identify that uncomfortable feeling. At the end of the day, these people are mentally ill, and need mental help, not jail, and not to be put on national television so that now everyone in jail, and everyone in prison, and everyone they know on the outside, will know and ruin him. It completely makes it impossible for any sort of rehabilitation to occur, which means they essentially just turn into cash cows for the private prison Industry. Not exactly my idea of any kind of justice. In many other countries; pedophiles, and criminals/suspected criminals all have their faces blurred and fake names given out or no names at all when on the news or media. We have to protect thoes who are charged, we have to protect their plausibility of innocence or guilt, and if they are guilty, we have to protect their rights and privacy. How can we expect them to be rehabilitated if we treat them like animals, and ruin their entire public reputation permanently? Best case, arrest them, and get them into a proper mental care institution, or specialty prisons depending. They have to be released at one point, might as well try to make sure they never attempt it again when they are.

And it's also a bit problematic to punish someone without going through the legal system, and as the boys said maybe they wouldnt have taken action to meet a child, but just because of the lure they took that chance. It's certainly a complex problem that stirs up a lot of emotions (rightfully so) but I think it's important that we can question the ways of how to reach the common goal which obviously is stopping these predators from sexually abusing children. And one way is that we look at actual data on what strategies work. Obviously it's always best to prevent this from happening in the first place and many people with pedophilia actually never act on their impulses but instead suffers greatly beacuse it's not unknown to them that this is absolutly wrong and they would be shunned from society even if they never did anything wrong. Data also shows that some pedophiles that do turn to abuse, including consuming pictures of sexually exploited children (Let's just stop calling it childporn, it's not porn, it's abuse) have tried to seek help via mental healthcare providers. The big problem though is that we make it really hard for them to get the help they need to control these urges and that is largly due to the stigma these people faces. It is not easy to get help, and alot of them get turned away even, beacuse "no one wants to help a pedo" etc. This is a complex problem and there is much more nuanses to this of course, but shows like these actually add to that stigma, which makes it even harder to get help. So if we want to prevent the abuse from happening in the first place, shows like this actually have a negative impact on the goal. Yeah, it's a big discussion and it's also controversial (sadly) everything I just brought up. Usually people see it as you are taking sides with pedos and are defending them, but it's not what it is, it's looking at data to see what works and try to do that so less children get's exploited and abused.

problem with that is that all it takes is one person to post the youtube link and all of a sudden anyone can access it for free. the video hosting method of patreon is far from perfect in terms of disabling piracy, it doesn’t take much searching to figure out how to get around many pay walls this site has to offer, but it still acts as a barrier of accessibility to people who are trying to pirate the content if they lack the know-how to get around patreons protections. with this in mind and the nature of gathering funding to help them produce the insane content they’ve alluded to, i find it unlikely that they’d consider posting it to YouTube despite the many UI & functionality flaws Patreon has
