Yale geophysics grad here: *in a vacuum* if you throw a ball 70mph off the front of a truck moving 70mph, the ball will be traveling forward 140mph. Thrown 70mph off the back of the 70mph truck, it will be moving at 0mph and to a bystander, will just drop. (The vacuum is important due to wind resistance) I had to skip 30min of this podcast because I couldnt physically listen to that conversation. It physically hurt. Never change guys😂

i could be wrong, but if you throw the ball at 70mph while you’re traveling 70mph, wouldn’t it just travel at a stand still with you until it slows down? for it to get ahead of you by any means you’d have to throw it greater than 70mph, but it wouldn’t last long. It would just fly back in your face. it would be the same as if you threw it going 0mph. the only variable is the speed that you’re traveling. So, in both circumstances you’d have to throw the ball faster than the speed that you’re currently moving for it to move forward.

To all those saying the balls velocity would be 140, congrats on being smart! That conversation was rough to get through😂 however, I learned recently that it would actually be very slightly less! The formula is (v1 + v2)/(1+ (V1V2/C^2)) where c is the speed of light! The difference is of course negligible in most cases though

lol this science talk.. its all relative. to anyone or thing on the move together the ball will go whatever speed you throw it at. A person on the ground not moving, if they have the ball thrown at them from the moving car would have the speed increased by the car plus the speed it's thrown at.

It wouldn’t be going 140mph relative to them magically just because they are in a bus moving 70mph, however if there is an observer outside of the bus, looking at only the ball, it would be moving 140mph in relation to them. Just like if Frank was in the front of the bus and Joe was in the back, and Frank tossed it back at 70mph, if there was an observer outside, the ball wouldn’t move at all, it would appear still and going 0mph to them.
