I left the house and liked it!
I'm a notorious homebody. My wife usually has to drag me to social events, and I prefer quiet evenings over loud gatherings. So, no one was more surprised than me to find myself walking up to the Pen & Pencil Club Sunday night.
The Pen & Pencil Club
The Pen & Pencil Club is a private bar for journalists. Reminiscent of the old Prohibition-era speakeasies, you must punch the correct code into the keypad to gain entry. That is, unless a member is hosting an event, and last Sunday, the event was a Drink & Draw sponsored by the Philadelphia chapter of the National Cartoonists Society.
And Philadelphia is a great town for fostering cartoonists. Among the attendees were...
Jamar Nicholas, Chapter Chair of the Philly NCS and creator of the "Leon The Extraordinary" series
Mark Tatulli, syndicated cartoonist and author of The eXpets, a middle-grade graphic novel that launched earlier this week
Political cartoonist Tom Stiglich
Dave Blazek, of "Loose Parts"
Signe Wilkinson, the first woman to win the Pultizer Prize in political cartooning
Terry LaBan, syndicated cartoonist
Comic artist Pat Higgins
Jeffro Kilpatrick, cartoonist
Kyle Margiotta, artist
And a bunch of other talented scoundrels!
Here are a few photos. If nothing else, I'm posting this to remind myself that I can sometimes be social!
Mark Tatulli and me
(Left to right) Kyle Margiotta and Dave Blazek chat as I defile Blazek's sketchbook with an attempt at an illustration. That's Mark's new book in the center of the table.
Holding court, along with, (left to right) Tom Stiglich, Mark Tatulli, Terry LaBan and Dave Blazek. Seated was a very nice person who was a member of the P&P, and came to find out more about cartooning.
Terry LaBan (in the brown shirt) talks with Signe Wilkinson and Pat Higgins.
